What an unbelievable day. We got picked up by private helicopter where we flew over the ocean, jungle, Altun Ha and the river. We were delivered to an “outpost” in the jungle where we hopped aboard a boat for a trip up the river to visit the Lamanai Ruins. Amazing. We got to climb atop the temples and take in the breathtaking view over the jungle imagining that some of these were built in 900 BC! At this particular site, some of the ruins were the oldest and tallest in the country. We then got back in our boat for a trip back to the outpost where we were fed a delicious lunch and ate with our pilot. But we weren’t done yet! We hopped on the fan boat for a spectacular ride through the swamp. Wow! Headed back to the outpost again to get back on our heli for the ride back to the ship.
On this trip we learned that they were the only privately heli’s allowed in the country. All others are military. They do not allow other private ones. Our pilot had over 30,000 hrs of flight time. We got to see ruins and do something no one else on the ship was doing. It is worth it to go outside the cruise offered excursions and do your own private thing. We didn’t have to wait for anyone else all day, had the day and guide to ourselves. It was absolutely amazing.
