Photos make it look a bit better, the cheap rooms are in what basically looks like a garage out the back of the hotel.

The room is fine, just standard and what we were expecting. (Bathroom is pretty nice)
Not bad for a budget hotel

Hotel staff were rude, hallway outside of rooms smelt horrible. Room was shabby and outdated, beds uncomfortable. Floor of shower was caked in dirt. Cockroaches in the bathroom. Couldn't turn the light on in the bathroom as it would wake up the people in the room because the bathroom is made of glass. Only positive was it next to southern cross and trams to get away from it. Don't book through flight center because apperantly you then have to pay $360 a night for a 2 person shabby room. Definitely will never come back. Waste of money.

Friendly staff, affordable options (stayed in family room). Good room service. Bed soft and can be uncomfortable depending what you're use to. Bathroom has no ventilation fan so mirror always fogs. Overall experience has been good and would recommend if anyone is looking to stay in the city of melbourne. The Southern Cross train station is a 2min walk which makes it a great location.

My wife and I recently stayed at the Great Southern Hotel for 5 nights. We elected to have a room with no daily room service and that was no problem. On arriving at our room however, we found the level of cleanliness to be well below par. The shower alcove was very dirty and the grout lines between the tiles were simply brown. The large mirror on the main wall of our small room was what only could be described as filthy. I could not in all fairness recommend this hotel.

Always enjoy staying at the Great Southern. This was my third time, and first time in a family room. The room was clean and well equipped, with a great view. Staff are friendly and helpful. Security deposit is very reasonable. Luggage cloaking service is also great. The hotel is located very close to southern cross station.

First of all, lousy room no windows. It was way different from the images shown earlier. No housekeeping, they said u have to pay more for housekeeping, seriously? Lack of amenities, a complete NO GO.
The worst hotel ever been to, do not recommend this to any of my friends.

I was put in a huge room with 2 large beds on my own. One of the beds had a suspicious stain.
It was drafty and smelt a little odd.
The reception staff looked over worked and in need of a good sleep.
No hairdryer in room (I hunted for it)

For the money paid you expect at least some comfort. No duvet just a flimsy sheet.

I'm pretty sure it's haunted as well as the tap turned its self on several times over night (lol)

And I'm led to believe a porn movie was being filmed meters away from my room.

Great location though.

The location is great, right infront of the Southern Cross Station. The rooms are small but clean and cozy. It's a great place to stay if all you want is a place to crash for the night after a long day of sightseeing.

Its just across the southern cross station and is in the heart of the city. Tariff is pretty much reasonable and rooms are decent. (Not great but good enough)

Basic accommodation, but clean and mostly comfortable. Did not like the fact that there was a cigarette bin down from my room as the smoke tended to seep in. Hotel itself is quite dingy and feels a bit like a cheap motel. Having said that, the water pressure was excellent and the shower nice and hot. The bed was comfortable and the room well maintained. Stay here if you're travelling alone and want cheap, basic accommodation close to the CBD.

I am not the type of person to judge or be picky. However, customer service definitely needs to be improved as the staff were bad at communication.
When going to a hotel you want to be greeted very well and feel like your being looked after. Not here

Apart from there being no plates or cutlery, or toilet paper
Just want to point out the main thing that shocked me. how they advertise there rooms online in photos and how the rooms actually look are completely different

Would recommend only for people who don't want to spend much money and only want the hotel to sleep in.

Probably wouldn't stay here again but cheap price which is gd

Stayed in the newer part of the hotel. Smaller rooms. But for the price was incredibly good. Big comfy king bed. Very clean. Bathroom immaculate. Can't complain at all. Will stay again!

My second stay at the Great Southern. It was as excellent as the first time. Comfy bed and pillows, fantastic location and the staff super friendly and professional. One small issue with the door key when first going to the room was solved quickly and efficiently by the staff. Would recommend.
