Bus tour - because it’s the only way to view the museum-island. Yes, the entire island is a museum. Informative tour - broken down into two: the bus and inside the prison. The latter of which is guided by a former prisoner. Highly recommended - it’s one of those must-sees.

Historic place with interesting painful information concerning South Africa and it's people. The story of Robert Sobukwe brought tears in my eyes. Very informative guides. The island also have a bit of wildlife and birds including penguin. Here you get a great views of the City of Cape Town, Table Mountain and The Lions Head.

A must-see when in Cape Town; however the entry/queuing system to the boat could do with some improvement. Our tour was also an hour delayed. The tour itself is very interesting, you are shown round the prison by an ex-political prisoner. There isn't much time allowed to look around for yourself though, it's all very structured - not really even enough time to read the information boards. Really though it's worth doing for the boat trip alone! Amazing views of the island and mainland, plus lots of wildlife.

I was a little bit disappointed that we didn't have enough time to feel the seriousness and pain that place holds. The bus tour around the island was nice and the guide was fun, but it was to quick and hurried and we couldn't get out the bus. The prison guide was an ex-prisoner that could explain much more that he did. We expected to see some pictures or an exhibition, but nothing
To compare: concentrations camps in Europe are better at telling stories without many words, but with impressions and pictures.

Good experience. Very interesting to see the things.

You are told regarding the Leper graveyard and all people was banned there and how they were mistreated. Not once it is mentioned that there were white Lepers also there,. No only blacks was mistreated and banned to the island. Lies.

Just feel they carry on too much regarding the old regime. Why not only supply facts and not exaggerate everything regarding the past. They tell you now how prisoners was mistreated and forced only to wear shorts and short sleeve shirts in winter but then shows you pictures of the same prisoners wearing thick jackets with boots and hats and all. A young lady that was not even born before 1994 is your guide and elaborate on the "stupid book" as she called it but I do not think she even saw on in her life. Talk about curvue time at six in the evening and it was ten at night. Some things is lies and they dish it up for the world to believe as the truth.

Eye opening and much more than Nelson Mandela's prison. Shocking and educational, but absolutely worth a visit. Especially the fact that the tour is given by one of the former political prisoners made it much more than just one of the 'must see's'.

Tour was informative and interesting. First hand accounts by ex-prisoners was informative. Only downside was that it was very crowded and it was sometimes difficult to hear what the guide was saying. It also felt a little rushed at times. Overall, well worth a visit!

The best part of the trip was probably the boat ride. Unfortunately, it has become a tourist attraction more than anything. The organization is not great and it ended up taking much longer than planned (arrived at 9am, came back at 1:30pm). I wouldn't necessarily recommend it, especially if you have done the Apartheid museum in Joburg or something similar elsewhere.

I guess it is a must go location due to the history! The tours are pretty annoying, especially with big groups of people it is always packed so get ready for that. Amazing view of table mountain though

Moving testiment to recent history. Amazing how recent. Our tour was led by a former political prisoner. We sat in his community cell, where he was locked up with 80 other men. He explained prison life and how they survived. Don't miss getting this info from those that can relate it to you first hand.

It was my second time there and every time I go I learn more and more things about my history and it makes you appreciate more. Also the tour guides are super entertaining and make for a great experience.
