We recently had a 3 week visit to South Africa during which we very much enjoyed the warm hospitality, excellent food, fabulous wine and the picturesque beauty of the Country. Each establishment we frequented was extremely hospitable and professional exceeding our expectations in every respect and thus every aspect of our whole journey was of the highest quality and totally without fault.

In order to end our journey in the same vain we decided to visit La Petite Ferme based on the very high recommendation of close friends from home whom had previously visited the establishment. We arrived at La Petite Ferme at midday on Thursday 12th May to arrange a cellar tour, wine tasting and lunch. The very helpful receptionist advised us that we had missed the cellar tour as it had began at 11am but she said we should try again as it is very informative and also ‘interactive’. The receptionist kindly made a reservation for the cellar tour for us on Saturday 14th May at 11am after which we would have a wine tasting followed by a lunch booking at a scenic table in the verandah. To facilitate the reservation I gave the receptionist my name: our hotel, and our Room Number. She appeared to have entered these details into the computer and gave me a La Petite Ferme business card.

As Saturday was the last full day of our holiday we were very much looking forward to our visit to La Petite Ferme. We arrived at 10:50am on Saturday for the cellar tour. We were greeted by a different receptionist who said that she could not find our reservation despite my giving her our details and therefore we could not have a cellar tour. Naturally my wife and I were bemused that a reservation made less than 48 hours earlier could be mislaid and asked the receptionist to check once more as it was important to us. With a degree of reluctance she repeated her search but still could not find the reservation and insisted that, as a result of this, we could not have a cellar tour!

Quite separately we were then met by a male staff member who immediately greeted us by my name (giving the impression that he was fully aware of our reservation which apparently the receptionist was unable to find) and he said that the reason for us not being able to have a cellar tour was that the tour guide we unavailable due to sickness.

There was a certain amount of contradiction in the reason(s) offered to us by the staff for us not being able to have the pre-arranged tour. This I found totally unacceptable and very upsetting. Needless to say we did not waste anymore of out time on having lunch at such a disorganized establishment. This disrupted our entire plans for the day.

Given the very high standards of hospitality and professionalism we previously experienced during our holiday through Africa we were extremely dismayed and surprised by the poor service, lack of professionalism and general disrespect we experienced at La Petite Ferme. Needless to say our experience at La Petite Ferme totally ruined the last day of what had been a perfect holiday.

I wrote (TWICE) to La Petite Ferme in order to elicit some kind of explanation for this desperately poor level of performance and service – I did not receive a reply – Appalling!

I had the Lamb for Lunch and a Uncooked Amarula Cheese cake for Desert. They definitely deserve 5 starts for the food, wine, service and ambiance, as it was Incredible. However the female bathrooms let down the overall experience which were not up to standard with the rest of the restaurant.

Great lunch time spot in Franschhoek. Food is good but service is a little slow. Views are stunning!
