I should have payed more attention to my nose on the way to the front door. Old grease. The smell was also in the cloth napkins. My ribeye and mashed potatoes were over salted. The steak wasn't very tender.

My fiancée and I had dinner at the Texas Land and Cattle Company (TL&CC) Steak House on Stassney Lane in Austin, Texas on December 1, 2017. While the service was excellent, the overall experience was disappointing. The TL&CC has made several changes to their menu that, in our opinion, have detracted from the uniqueness of the restaurant.
The first change the TL&CC has made is to substitute their sourdough bread with regular bread. Although the new bread was okay, it was just like the bread you will find at their competitor’s restaurant. Again in our opinion, the sourdough bread was one of the things that set it apart from other steak house restaurants.
The next change that TL&CC made was to discontinue offering onion strings. They replaced the onion strings with the Texas Rose, which is a fried onion blossom. It is the same as the Awesome Blossom you can find at the Outback Steak House. The onion strings were much crispier than an onion blossom, and again was one of the items that used to distinguish the TL&CC from its competition.
Finally, I ordered the Smoked Sirloin Sandwich. On the menu it is described as “our finest sirloin encrusted in a peppercorn rub slow smoked for exquisite tenderness and sliced thin, with melted fresh Monterey Jack, and served on a toasted roll.” Quite frankly, the sandwich tasted just like a Philly cheese steak. It was a tasty sandwich, but was not what I expected as there was no hint of smokiness, peppercorn rub or toasty quality in the bun.
Our server, Paul, did an excellent job. Although he had no control over the menu items, he understood our concerns, gave helpful suggestions and made what would have otherwise been a very disappointing experience better. We appreciated his efforts.

Service was wonderful. The bread pudding awesome! The Old Fashions that we had for a special memory were the perfect compliment. Thanks so much for a special night.

Not going to be a good review.
    1. Upon entering we noticed a very bad smell like wet mildewy carpet.
    2. Server not very attentive, asked for no lemon in our teas - both had lemon in the glass?
    3. Ordered white cheese queso - came out as yellow cheese, room temperature with the texture of cold grits.
    4. Server kept pacing trying to force us to order when we had already advised we'd order after the appetizer.
    5. Ordered combo and trio - WOW, what a let down. Chicken was very low quality and weird texture. Ribs were old, very bad quality, sauce was not good. Didn't eat but part of one.
    6. Steak on trio was tough, horrible flavor. Same issue with chicken breast.
    7. Advised server that the ribs were awful - he just chuckled and walked away.
    8. Bread tasted sour and was cold.
    9. Baked potatoes tasted like it was baked yesterday.
    10. Dinner salad came soggy with half inch of water in the bowl because it wasn't fresh or drained properly.
    11. Server just dropped check and came right back to cash out. Not anything else, no tha no you or any common courtesy.
    12. The restaurant seemed run down and not well maintained or very clean.
    13. We eat out 7 days a week: Longhorn Steak House, Serranos, Trudy's, Texas Road House, Cherry Creek Catfish, etc. By far TLC is way inferior to those listed. I would not go back. My overall score = 0.5.

I loved the food, if only they would do better on the bread it would have been a 5 stars, bread tasted stale but it was warm.

Although there were a few highlights, I wouldn't waste my money here again.

The service was pretty good and there wasn't a wait which should tell your something for a Thursday night in Austin. We decided to go ahead and give it a try.

We started with the brisket stuffed jalapenos that were very good though they took a very long time to arrive. The complementary bread what appeared to be homemade butter was also good. The asparagus was good and the burger my son ordered was fine.

We asked about the smoked sirloin and the server offered to get us a sample. We asked for a medium and the sample was a beautiful pink with a delicious smoke flavor and tender. We ordered three of those which were one of their more expensive plates with one being the medium just as the sample and the other two being more rare since it's cooked like prime rib.

What came out was nothing like the sample. They were grey (see photos), tough, and the smoke flavor was almost nonexistent. You can see the bend in one slice. It retained that shape when you picked it up. You can see some liquid was splattered on one of the plates that completely dried up by the time it got to our table. I think they might have steamed the cuts to warm them up and then left them under the heat lamp for a long time. Maybe a microwave got in there somewhere. The potato was tough and dry as well.

For the price, I expect a lot better and definitely don't recommend this place.
