My sense was that there was a change in ownership or management, but I'm not sure. There just didn't seem to be a collective effort of everyone working together.
The host at the front didn't have a clue what was going on and had to go back and forth to the bar to find out whether we could even be seated. Several other guests who had arrived AFTER we had, were seated ahead of us by another host.
The menus were flimsy and worn out. They did not include the children's menu per the website, and there were not enough menus to distribute to everyone at our table.
The atmosphere was a little strange. There was the bar area, which seemed to be exciting and festive and casual, and the sit-down area located in another room altogether was formal, however lacking in that high-end appeal. The door to that room off to the side would often SLAM SHUT do to the wind. The wait staff kept the door open because the kitchen was connected to that room. However, it was pretty cold outside for Thanksgiving weekend and the cold air quickly frustrated the mood and ambience.
The food was incorrect. We had ordered a shrimp salad and it came out with anchovies. Really? Anchovies? The waitress apologized and the shrimp eventually came out as a separate side item, in which we were then charge additionally for that "side". The table next to us was told by the wait staff that they had discontinued giving rolls during the lunch hour, however, shortly thereafter, we were given a whole basket full of rolls. The table next to us couldn't help but to notice, and we gladly shared with our neighbors. Again, there was a collective feeling that service was slow, food wasn't correct, and the atmosphere was not very comforting. The food was though very flavorful and delicious.
Quick Suggestions:
- Train all the staff
- Get the hostess a format of the tables that are open and use dry erase to keep it updated, instead of going back and forth
- close off the covered area where there is the "horse" and make it a warm waiting area for guest, and keep the doors closes especially during the colder season. Create a way to open up the area in the warmer months, as was the bar area.
- somehow connect the kitchen with the two separate bar areas and the two separate sit-down dining areas. It was odd seeing the wait staff open one door, go outside, only to go back inside to a bar area. On several occasion upon waiting to be seated, we noticed wait staff stumble, (almost losing the dish altogether), with food carrying it through the doors, up a step, outside, and back into the bar.
- update the menu. A must
Overall, the food was wonderful and tasty, however, most everything else needs to tweaking.

Do not be alarmed by the prices at Sorrento's. The food quality is well worth the price and wait. The inside is very soothing with very nice art canvases hung up around the room. It is a very cozy and quaint setting. I recommend the spaghetti and meatballs. Excellent service as well. A+++ experience.
Sorrento's offers a rather pleasant atmosphere with competent and attentive service. The food was good, but didn't particularly dazzle. I can see why it might be popular with the locals given the relative few options available for this class of dining nearby. But I would suggest "dinner for two" rather than "family night out", as I'm not quite convinced that the cost premium is entirely justified.
We had a great experience with service and food. The chicken parm is excellent, as is the wine selection. Riley was a stellar server! We enjoyed talking with her and learning more about the area. The artwork is phenomenal. I wouldn't hesitate to go back!
Cool place! It's more of a complex than just a simple restaurant. Lots of fun in Banner Elk
We have always looked to this restaurant as the 'go-to" place for the best dinner in town, whether it be a romantic tête-à -tête or a night out with our four children. All of that changed this evening for my husband's birthday, he chose to eat at this place over The Gamekeeper in Blowing Rock, hands down the best restaurant in the High Country, believe me, we have eaten there enough to know the difference, and while I was surprised, I respected his wishes to stay close to Banner Elk and to give our dollars where they needed to be So Sorrento's has expanded to three different entities and obviously the night that we decided to have dinner there was NOT the time to be a land owner who comes in occasionally to a place that can be counted on. As the manager told me we she was explaining why our dinners were so slow coming out "so many people are calling me from their private planes" I find this explanation abhorrent, plus the fact that this particular lady was using Hurricane Irma as an excuse for the fact that she did not plan enough wait staff. Not the staff's fault, by the way.
The worst and most telling aspect of this experience was while I was trying to explain why we were sending back our food that had sat under heat lamps to the point that it was tasteless (not to mention the fact that I sincerely believe that my husband's veal was in fact chicken), this poor lady was cutting her eyes away from me and not paying one damn bit of attention to what I was trying to say, in a restaurant that was practically empty by this time, that is how important we were to her.
My husband and I have eaten at some of the best restaurants in the world and we will continue to do so as we love food and wine and ambiance, but I can tell you honestly that we will NOT go to Sorrento's unless we want to order a pizza take-out for the kids. This is a shame as we are property owners in Banner Elk and visit the area often. You have lost our business. Period.
We saw the hostess, she seated us outside, but after about 15 minutes they hadn't even taken our drink order. This wouldn't bother me as much if they hadn't started taking drink and food orders from other tables seated after us. We made eye contact with servers and staff and tried to get their attention. At one point a woman (who seemed to be a manager) asked the table next to us if their orders had been taken yet (they had, the drinks were in front of them), but still ignored us. When we finally walked out, a server asked "are you dinning in with us tonight?" We explained the situation and kept walking.
I don't know why it happened. It felt a little embarrassing like we had done something wrong. There are plenty of other places to eat, don't waste your time here.
My wife and I dined here last week during the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. First impression, this seems to be a restaurant where they expect you to make a reservation; and that's not really a bad idea. Even so, without a reservation, we were seated within seven minutes and the place was busy.
I ordered the Chicken Marsala which was on par with Olive Garden's version in taste--the mashed potatoes and vegetables which accompanied the chicken, however, were excellent. Frankly, I don't remember what my wife ordered; but it had something to do with spaghetti noodles, garlic, and shrimp (I think). Regardless, she said it was excellent.
Our waiter was A.J. He was at the top of his game: super friendly and anticipating our needs well before we did. Given how busy the place was, I was surprised to receive as much service as we did and his cheery disposition just put things over the top. It was a great dining experience and I will go back.
Great Italian food, nice atmosphere it it surprised me that it could cost so much in the North Carolina mountains.
The food and service at Sorrento's is exceptional every time. Jennifer is the perfect hostess, and the food is very obviously made fresh each day. Sunday brunch is divine, with a rotating menu each week. We were so happy to have had our pre-wedding dinner here, and can not recommend Sorrento's enough. A must-dine for locals and tourists alike! Very romantic for couples, but extremely family-friendly with beautiful artworks by a local artist. In the many times I have visited, there has not been a single unsatisfactory experience.
Our server, Stacey, was wonderful. Romantic Italian atmosphere. Wide range of pricing options. Would definitely come back!
Wonderful restaurant. Fresh everything, and great service. Price is on par with most italian. I had the tortellini sorrento. Added some sausage and was beyond satisfied. The reviews online are great and its just a few miles from sugar mountain, but not close enough to always be swamped
We've had various dishes at Sorrento's and Jennifer conducted a tasting when we were in search of a caterer for our wedding. They won us over big time. Everything is beautifully presented and delicious. The atmosphere is great, they display beautiful art from national and local artists. Working with Jennifer has been wonderful and she is very resourceful if you don't know much about the area. Satisfaction seems to be her top priority. Katie has been our waitress both times we've come and she's been great. Can't wait to work with your servers for the wedding! :)
