Wow everything was excellent! Filet perfect. The veggiesI think they were different colored tiny carrots whatever they were they were great. Also mashed potatoes very good. Wine. No complaints! And this was for a private event and even so they took no shortcuts I see.

Just took my best friend there for her birthday. Was a great experience. Food was excellent, drinks were great, and the staff was warm and welcoming. Was a perfect experience for a special occasion. Our server Jennifer was very pleasant and knowledgeable. The bartenders were friendly and attentive. If you're inn this great city and looking for an outstanding dining experience look no further.

Smith & Wollensky should be 5 stars. I am shocked. I have been to the NY and Boston restaurants and they were easily 5 stars. Our waiter was very nice. When we saw him. He was way overbooked. My 24 ounce bone in rib eye ordered medium rare was about 16 ounces and medium well. Granted they offered to bring me a new steak, it should never have been delivered that way. I kept it. Ate it. But is was far from what was ordered. These are the reasons this one gets 3 stars. The rest of the meal was about 4/4.5 star worthy. We won't return to the Chicago S&W again. Way better options in Chicago. Sadly disappointed.

Smith and Wollensky is a must try if you are looking for a great steak house with a unique experience. There are two floors to this restaurant. The upper floor consists of the bar, indoor seating (with no river view) and outdoor seating (very minimal river view). The lower level is the more desirable seating option. If you are booking a reservation for a special occasion ask for the lower level seating that is closest to the windows for the view. This is the most scenic view where you get to watch the boats pull into the Chicago Winery on the other side of the river. In terms of food the steak is pretty good but what stood out most in the meal has to be the “cup of bacon”. This is an appetizer option that is a must try! The bacon is this lean beef bacon that is made specially just for their restaurant. The bacon is so good that it will make you think all other bacon you have previously been eating is fake. “This is how bacon should always taste like!”

Pretty sad how the horrible service here can ruin a good name like Smith & Wollensky. It was obvious the server wasn't even listening to me when I ordered because I asked for a bottle of wine and he brought over a completely different wine from another part of the wine list. When I asked him to correct it he told me the wine I wanted wasn't available. When do restaurants update their wine lists? Once a year? The server even put his hand up to get me to stop talking at one point. Really, really awful experience. The manager did try to make it right by comping the wine I eventually got but the experience was totally ruined already. Go to the location in Houston instead, they're pretty cool. Or literally any other restaurant because they might actually listen to what you order.

Staff was friendly and service was great. Unfortunately our steaks were not prepared correctly the first time. Two filets were undercooked and had to be sent back. When we did send them back, they were returned promptly and prepared at the right level.

The sides are ok. We had the mushrooms, sprouts, and fries. I’d skip the sides completely next time and maybe go with a different potato side or the asparagus.

The gigantic chocolate cake was huge. It can be split by at least 4 people!

Amazing food. This made our trip complete. The steaks were on point, the staff was amazing, and at the end of it all they gave us 2 amazing desserts with coffee on the house. Def a must do and make sure you go hungry because you get so much steak it's crazy!

If they just stuck to steaks and cocktails this place would be 5 stars.

The sides are offensively bad. The number of side dishes returned to the kitchen for being poorly cooked was nearly unbelievable; from simple baked potatoes, to mash, au gratin, and even the macaroni and cheese. The spinach had so much chili on it you couldn’t even tell it was spinach.

I think this is a sad case of name recognition allowing for a strong dose of mediocrity.

Train your staff and execute the rest like you do the perfectly prepared steaks.

    Dear Management:

We will be in Chicago by the beginning of June this year so, as strange as it may sound, this review is actually a preview.
It is a Five Star preview, nonetheless.
So many friends have praised Smith & Wollensky so much, that we plan to honour our hosts in Chicago with a dinner at your place.
That means that your reputation has reached South America too.
You will sooner or later receive a reservation request from us.
A review will be posted as soon as we enjoy your renowned hospitality.
    See you in June, then.
    Carlos

This is a wonderful steakhouse right off of the Chicago River. Some of the best steaks you can get in the city. It is a bit pricey but, nothing out of the ordinary for a downtown steakhouse. There is a bar area upstairs and a nice seating area downstairs with a window wall to view the river and city from which makes the experience incredible. Overall, great place to go especially for special occasions. I would recommend getting reservations if you are planning on going for a Friday or Saturday dinner.

I was here on a business trip and with a large group that got a private room. The food was excellent and the wait staff was great. They were professional but could joke with the patrons well. Food was excellent. I had the prime rib with mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. The prime rib was very flavorful and needed no salt, pepper or sauces. The side items were served family style which may have been more of a thing for our group but there was plenty for everyone. Because we had a private room, the only view we had was of the wine room through a window, but upstairs is a beautiful view of the river.
