My daughter is a Senior here and we would not have her attend any where else. Classes are small and the staff and teachers really care about the students. I love visiting because of all the old building and the very rich history of the area.

Salem College is complicated.

The college has recently finished contracting out all of its staff services. The quality of the staffing has gone down significantly. Many long time staff members who brought professionalism and workmanship to the school have quit. The Residence Life department have nearly all quit excluding two employees. The maintainence department is all but completely gone. Just ask the students how well the food staff can preform their duties. Grounds staff who have been contracted no longer maintain the grounds properly either.

The second service to be contracted was the Public Safety Department around 5 years ago. The number of security officers were cut significantly, their pay was lessened, their benefits slowly removed and revoked, and they were completely disarmed. That's right, the people in charge of your children have no capability to physically protect them. They are armed with a radio and a small flashlight. Nothing else. When the college ran security the guards had night sticks, hand cuffs and mace. On top of that they are paid quite poorly. From what I understand an average officer is paid approx. $11 an hour with no benefits. So the people in charge of protecting your kids are only paid approx. $21,000 per year. What happens when your children are in danger and the only people who can help are paid very little and have no weapons? I'll leave you to think about that. Now, the administration will say that the Winston-Salem Police Department patrols the area frequently. That is disingenuous. If there is a serious incident, let's say an active shooter, the police are anywhere between 2 and 7 minutes away from arriving on campus. Then the police must attempt to locate the shooter and neutralize them. However, the police do not know the campus very well because they do not directly patrol it. Only campus security knows the area and has the expectation to help the police. If you are paid $11 an hour and have no weapon to protect yourself, no body armor to protect against bullets, will you wait around for the police and then lead them to an active shooter? Maybe some would, but there's certainly no incentive for them to do so. They are simply unarmed security guards. Their uniforms and titles as Public Safety Officers are deceiving. This is not to mention the high turnover rate. It seems like I see a new face every month, and I don't mean they're adding employees. In fact, they are running on a skeletal crew. When the Public Safety Department was directly run by Salem College (not by a contracting company) they had ample personnel for proper coverage of the college. Now I can count the number of security guards on two hands. Ever since the college handed the security department over to contractor companies they have switched companies three times. If you send your children to attend this college they will not be adequately protected to the level I would desire my own children be protected. If you contact the school about these issues, they will downplay them. They will say they will work on addressing them but they have failed to do so in the past. Eventually those asking questions stop and everything returns to normal and no lasting changes are made. These security flaws need to be addressed and need to be addressed sooner rather than later. The safety of our kids is the most important thing.

The school culture is extremely left of center. The stereotypical liberal arts college where safe spaces, minority advocate groups (even though minorities are approx. 50% of the population), and whoever has the most minority status' wins, applies here. Conservatives are vastly outnumbered and often are unable to express their opinions for fear of being labeled a bigot, racist, or Islamophobe, etc. It goes without mentioning that the school costs a significant sum to attend.

No student on a college campus should fear being threaten and attacked for their beliefs! No matter what you believe or what your opinion may be!

However, those on staff and students of Salem College do not adhere to this if their worldview is challenged or in opposition of others! If you hold conservative views or are a Bible believing Christian, do NOT attend Salem unless you desire to be threaten, marginalized, and/or attacked for your beliefs. Salem proclaims to be "accepting" to all but that only applies to the liberal point of view. They will gang up on students to profess to believe otherwise. Administration and students alike. This is an issue that has driven many conservative Christians away from Salem for fear of being named a "bigot" or "hateful" because what they believe differs from the liberal stand point. In no way does it adhere to the Salem mission and they are teaching their students that at any moment they could be threaten and/or punished for what they believe in.

I earnestly hope this changes and new administration is involved who understand how to hold ALL students accountable and show NO bias! I also hope that they bring in new professors who teach students how to handle opposing views in a logical and professional manner without having to attack, name call, and marginalize those who hold opposing view points.

The people look so friendly, and they helped me, with all my needs. After my program release it was satisfying. They just taught me so much is was self gratifying. My white van had taken me to above places in life. The wonderful white people taught me psychology. Then my degree had drove me, into teaching High School Students for Central Piedmont Community College.
My teaching allows me to tell student's too stay in their lane.

This school has sucked the life out of me. This school has left me feeling sick and tired (quite literally, as they didn't fix the mold and water damage above my bed for months). I completely regret my decision to attend this institution. I do not believe that Salem College has the student's best interests in mind. I have seen this institution show more care for it's white alumna from 1967 than the current students. The facilities are falling apart, the hot water is sporadic at best, the only available food causes sickness, racist action on campus (from students and faculty alike) is swept under the rug, administration has not created a trans policy, claiming that policies 'take time', yet they were able to complete an extremely limiting protest policy after a week of demonstrations. My choice to attend Salem College was the biggest mistake I made in high school.

Salem College does not cultivate diversity at all. There are deplorable living conditions and the students voices are often unheard. The image of the school is of utmost importance rather than the safety and health of students.

The administration at this institution is deplorable. Living conditions: unacceptable. There's food poisoning that leads to hospital visits; there's mold, snakes, rodents, bugs, etc in the dorms; the floor in my room is bowing, no hot water, some faucets have dark water coming out, ineffective and inefficient systems of heating and air, plaster falling from ceilings, floors that can be so hot that they can melt the bottoms of shoes, etc. Programs and degrees at this school that aren't actually feasible (or really exist), INACCURATE information that's used in the museum and by admissions, such as the HISTORY OF SALEM COLLEGE, especially regarding the college's participation in slavery. Racial and prejudiced slurrs used by some students and faculty that has been left unpunished, no policy for transgender students (and the board is dragging out the decision process for building this policy), and yet-- two weeks after a peaceful sit-in, a new policy is emailed to all of the students about severe restrictions against demonstrations/protests. Students now have to "apply" to demonstrate, in designated spaces during designated times, registering the IDs of students who are participating. If anyone wants to see the documents involved in this issue, such as the call to action that was presented by the students (offering solutions to these problems), emails regarding administrative response to these events, and the document detailing the new demonstrations policy, let me know directly via email.
