Just camped here for the first time in 20+ years. What a great spot. More expensive than the federal campgrounds that are closer to the observatory, but worth it. The group sites are a good size with a a reasonable amount of flat space. I don't know why there are quite so many fire pits in GS#1, but it's a little fine. The restrooms are very nice for a campground, the oak trees are amazing and there is hiking available all around you.

So a few things you should know before planning a trip here. There’s literally nothing to do at this campsite if you have dogs, which makes no sense because the only reason you go camping in the middle of no where is to be able to bring a dog. There’s one trail you can go on without getting a fine and it’s mediocre at best for all the driving you need to do to get up to the site. They don’t warn you until you have arrived that the squirrels all have the plague appearantly which would have factored in greatly to my decision on whether or not to take my dogs as well.
They do not let you bring your own wood to the campsite and then they charge you $6 for a bundle with 4 logs in it which is nothing. You will spend $50 on wood if you’re staying a few days.
Don’t plan on being able to buy anything because the one store there is extremely overpriced and the cashier is the most rude person working in customer service I have ever encountered for someone who probably gets little to no business anyways.
All in all I would not go back again especially not with pets. Please notice how all the good reviews are from accounts considered “local guides” so they are receiving compensation for their good reviews to not make this place seem terrible.response / report this review -

Beautiful scenic trails and vistas! Clean bathrooms. Helpful rangers. Trail maps available. Plan to spend several hours exploring. We will definitely return.

Diamond in the rough, about an hour and a half from San Diego, 3 hours from LA.
A state Park next to Cleveland National Forrest. Great Hiking trails, Creeks and a Pond. Fishing available but hit or miss.
Wildlife includes bobcats, deer, foxes, Hawks, grey squirrels, mountain lions but
they keep to themselves and sightings are rare. If you are lucky some colorful snakes.
Great Views of the Coronado Island,
Catalina, and on occasion San Clemente.
When it says chains required, they mean it, if the Ranger is at the state park they will turn you back. Be Careful if you come up in the snow it melts and freezes at night. Just before the ranger station at night it turns into a sheet about 100 feet long of black Ice. The truck in the picture was lucky enough to hit the only stump for a while so be careful.response / report this review -

Nice park to hike.
This is a state park so if you have $200 annual pass you can park inside everywhere on parking spots of course. And do one of the nice trails that the park can offer.
Went there on falls the scenic was wonderfull and temperature very nice.
If you like to observe animals here are few mountains lions but didn't see any. Saw few turkey instead.response / report this review -

Great, secluded, small park. Boucher Hill Lookout is the best thing here. Try Nate Harrison Grade for an exciting descent down Palomar Mountain.

The park and campground are good, a bit closer to the next campground but no big deal.. I don't know if it was the season but they where to many flies at the point that it was uncomfortable to be there .. so be prepare for it

The park has some excellent hiking/running trails. A few of the trails needed some bushwacking to get through. The drive up/down the mountain alone is worth it!

$30 to pitch a tent sounds fair, right? No it doesn't. The only reason I would ever come back is to see that gorgeous park ranger again. This woman is totally stunning. She was all decked out in the tactical gear, completely overkill but she looked soo hot doing it. Blonde, about 6ft, with eyes to melt your soul. I love it here!

This is a cute little place to visit in Kit Carson Park. The mosaics are bright and beautiful. This would be a fun place for children to run around in. The circle is in an area where you can hike and it was a good little place to visit. Check the hours before going. Te circle is only open a few times a week.

Great hiking, well maintained facilities, and trails. This area is populated with many old growth oak trees, sparse undergrowth, and wide trails. There is very moderate elevation change, and plenty of comfortable places to rest, making all of the trails moderately easy, and the scenery spectacular.
The trails are fairly well marked, but there are some areas that could use some more signage, so carrying a trail map is a good idea.response / report this review
