Great service at Union Station. The attendant there is excellent. The challenge is returning the car. There are no signs and the entrance is very hard to find.
Hey National, how about printing a piece of paper with GPS instructions and a map so people who are not familiar with the area can find the car return? Simple idea - might make a lot of customers very happy.
The staff here is always extremely friendly and helpful. I've enjoyed every rental I've had from them. I heard a rumor they're closing this branch soon, and I'm going to be very disappointed to see them go.
June 21 - Worst customer service in car rental I've ever experienced. A total joke.
I rent cars while traveling on business all the time, usually with Enterprise that have excellent customer service. This time I went with National because they're part of the same group and Enterprise didn't have a location near the train station.
1) Although the person at the welcome desk downstairs seemed very kind, he didn't speak English properly: I couldn't understand what he was saying, I had to ask him to repeat everything 3 times before I could get it, which is always uncomfortable. And we're taking about directions to the parking lot
2) Once in the parking lot to pick up the car, a lady was there taking care of another customer. She saw me and didn't acknowledge me. Once my turn, she walked towards me, still didn't look at me in the eyes, didn't smile, didn't say hello, and asked "last name?" before giving me the choice of 2 cars: a Fiat 500 and a Chevy. I'm on a business trip so of course I picked the Chevy.
3) I had to stand and wait long minutes for the keys. A man with a rope holding dozens of sets of keys was trying to locate which one belonged to the car I had chosen. He then removed all the keys from the rope and piled them all up on the hood of the Chevy so he could access the keys.
All of this in silence and in a very nonchalant way, as if it was all normal.
I got my keys, put my heavy suitcase in the car by myself and drove off.
Returning the car the next day: same lady from the beginning. Still didn't say hello, didn't ask how it went I got my receipt and walked away.
I think I would have been happier if a machine did it all.
I wish I could give it One and a Half star because that would be a more reasonable star rating for this location.
To start with, I had a fairly long rental - over 2 weeks. I had taken a standard car and was offered a Chrysler 200 which I drove out, Within a few hours, I was aware of the problem - Ants in the gear box and storage unit. Since I was on a tight schedule, I couldn't take it back to the location and get the car changed immediately. I drove it to Ronald Reagan airport location instead 5 days after renting the car. I was told they didnt have any other vehicle of the Standard Category and I was turned away.
Subsequently, I needed to extend the reservation by another week and so I called the customer care, they offered me the extension at a pretty reasonable price and I accepted it. I requested an email confirming the discussion but was told their system wasn't capable of doing it.
When I finally returned to this location to drop the car off, I was asked to pay up more than $200 on top of what was agreed upon earlier.
They didn't have any information about the call I made to the customer care center. They didn't have any information about me trying to exchange the car at Ronald Reagan Airport. Basically, they didn;t have any information about any communication with National Car Rental if it wasn't with this location in particular.
I wasted more than an hour to re-negotiate the price which we had already agreed upon long back. I would not recommend renting from this place.
We were pleasantly surprised at the level of service and the friendliness of the manager who helped us here. If you're from there or have visited the DC Metro area frequently, you would understand why we were surprised: many are NOT friendly or easy to deal with. Both representatives were great: the one who had to book me last minute & the one who got us on our way home. The manager did not have the car type we paid for, so he upgraded us and gave us a few choices. The drive was much more pleasant than it would have been, I'm sure, and we rode with style! :) The car may not have been thoroughly cleaned on the inside because there was some long hairs scattered about, but the car was brand new, so it didn't matter much to me. Thanks again for your great customer service!
As Emerald Club member, we were offered a nice upgrade car here. My son especially enjoyed it. I was also pleased with the all wheel drive function. Good service got us out on our travels.
