One of those rare gems that really lives up to the hype. Great, food, staff, and ambiance. The steak and cheese plate were my favorite things we ordered. They also brought out a complimentary round of champagne, which was a nice touch. We really loved our meal here.
A lovely experience overall. The environment is inviting and reminiscent of a European cafe, the waiters are helpful and great, and the food was a total treat. I got the quiche and it was the best I’ve ever had in my life. My friends got the French onion soup and the cheese board. They loved it. It’s definitely expensive but it’s a good birthday or anniversary celebration place.
Great atmosphere with excellent dishes. The steak with its seasonings hit the spot. Nice wine selection. Wait staff was well informed and responsive. This restaurant has great spirit you feel like you are in a French Bistro.
Perfect for brunch! One of the best French restaurants I’ve ever been to! Although reservations are highly recommended, they dedicate 1/3 of the restaurant to walk-ins. So don’t get disappointed if you can’t get a reso. Just make sure to get here early and you’ll have a table regardless of the size of your group! Very friendly and professional staff!
Warm ambiance and exquisite food! I only eat halal meat and not a fan of seafood (they have interesting choices of seafood), so was glad to see they have many vegetarian options! I had onion soup (it was GREAT) and couscous! Highly recommended. It is not cheap but for the food offered, it's very reasonable.
An absolute flagship of Steven Starr standards. Always busy, always a high quality, flavorful dish regardless of what you choose. The artisan bread is an authentic work of art. Make reservations or prepare to sit at the bar. You'll have a fantastic visit either way.
Consistently high quality food with a pleasing atmosphere make this place worth visiting. Sound level is a bit high and some of the dishes are not flavorful enough for my taste but I don't blame the restaurant for either of those. Would recommend going for dinner over brunch as the options of more interesting! That being said my french toast was perfectly done.
This is my absolute favorite place for brunch in all of DC. First of all, I would highly suggest making a reservation -- they are extremely busy and the wait can get quite long. Second, come hungry! The food here is absolutely terrific and I always end up ordering more than I expected.
The last two times I have been here I have ordered the steak & fries. Each time I was not disappointed -- the steak is cooked absolutely perfectly and the fries are crispy and taste great dipped in the juice/butter from the steak. I am also a cocktail fanatic and each time I have been here, I have loved any drink I have ordered off the menu.
The service here is phenomenal and the attention to details is refreshing. Try EVERYTHING.
Very nice restaurant. We were there for a Saturday lunch and it was very busy. Luckily we had a reservation, but don't count on getting in easily on a weekend. The decorations around the restaurant are very nice and all French. The food as very good and definitely fresh. The bread was fantastic, they seem to have an employee who just cuts and makes bread!
We had such a wonderful lunch here. We were sat at the bar as this place is fully booked. Our server Nina was helpful, friendly, patient (as it's our first visit), answered all our questions and recommended very delicious dishes and cocktails to us. Fantastic food and great cocktails are served here. Oh I love the decor as well. Everything is perfect. Highly recommend to make reservations and enjoy great atmosphere, food, drinks and service.
Amazing. Fast and quality service. Food was fantastic. Even satisfying for a true French person. Everything was perfect from the appetizer to the entree to the cafe gibraltar finishing off the meal.
Came here for Sunday brunch with a group of 5. We had a great time. One of our group was able to get us last minute (i.e. 2 weeks out) reservations so we only waited about 3 minutes upon getting there. I understand the line can be over an hour.
We started with a cocktail and then moved onto a Rose. I felt the Rose was quite good and priced very fairly given: A) It's in DC and B) It's in DC. My fiance got the ravioli, I got the french onion soup, two people got the trout, and my brother got the double stacked burger. Everything was very good. We finished off with a couple of deserts which, again, were quite good - I def recommend the creme brulee.
Price was what one would expect to pay for 5, with drinks, going out to a good brunch in DC. Overall, would certainly come again.
In a few words, Le Diplomate leaned more towards the slightly underwhelming side for me.
The atmosphere and decor are top notch, and the food for the most part is very good. The highlights were the 5 cheeses board I got (although very expensive) as well as the complimentary bread. For the entree, I got the famous steak frites which was just okay. I asked for medium rare, and got a mostly well done steak. The waitress never really came by after our entrees were delivered, and at some point I was too hungry to wait and send back the entree. However, despite the steak being nearly well done it was still very flavorful.
To those looking to try out Le Diplomate, just make sure to temper your expectations. Perhaps slightly better service and the ability to cook a steak medium rare would've put it on the 4 star scale and possibly higher.
Amazing food and ambiance. Consistently good even if it is a little hard to get in. Servers are great and the food is always five stars. Perfect wine list and there's no place I'd rather be on a nice day than the patio.
Excellent French Bistro. Impressive wine list. The menu displays a very creative array of fine French food choices. The ambiance is quite Parisian and gives one the sense of dining abroad. Great location and very accessible from any point of town by bus or Metro. Management and staff are courteous and accommodating. One will be impressed and glad, to have chosen to dine here.
