It gets 2 stars because for a free activity, the park itself was ok. Otherwise it'd be half a star. The Sheriff had to drive by twice to ensure there were no violations of the obviously placed 'no parking on the beach' signs. Between someone blasting Def Leppard out of their hatchback for all to "enjoy", cruising-through Harley's, Lexus's and Benz's blasting Kanye West, the crashing waves (it was very windy), and screaming kids, it was not quiet and relaxing. I think my son might have learned a new curse word from another kid who appeared to be the same age (8) but claimed to be 13. He then asked him if he wanted to wrestle and if I hadn't stopped it I'm pretty sure he was about to body slam my son into the water. If you're still considering a trip, wear water shoes since the locals donning house arrest ankle bracelets drink from glass beer bottles, even though there is a very obvious no alcohol sign on the way into the park. The roped off swim area also had many rocks and even a couple of tree stumps. The Parks Service needs to clean it up for safety. The fishing pier is ok, as long as others aren't using it as a diving board, again despite obvious no swimming signage. If I didn't make it clear enough, try going on a weekday when hopefully you have the place all to yourself. But be prepared to turn right back around and go home if you see any of the above warning signs. We probably won't take the risk again-it's 1.5 hours away for us.

Visiting from NJ and i was looking for something to do with the family. We had a really good time it was not crowded at all and the kids that were there played lovely together. Will be going back again for sure! Also, there was a very nice worker who would give you a ride back to the parking lot it you had a few things with you. The playground was nice and it has a few covered areas with grills for BBQ'ing. Bathrooms were clean for a public area. Very beautiful park.

I took my kids there to swim and needless to say, we didnt evn get out of the car. It was gross. The grass looked like it hadnt been cut at all and it is the middle of MAY! The "beach" area is a 3ft strip of sand that is covered in pine straw and pine cones. The "swimming area" isnt roped off properly. I wouldnt let my dog swim in that lake. It seems like since this is the only public access for lake gaston to pop up when searched on Google, it would be better taken care of. It lso says there is a play area for kids.so i assumed some kind of playground equipment or swings and there was nothing. Dont waste your time.
