Love Kirkham's! Always find what I want. All of the personnel are very helpful and friendly and know their product. They have great camping gear, awesome shoes and camping guides. They do cater to both RV camping and backpacking. We used to go to REI and Cabela's but now prefer Kirkham's. And it is local!

As a long-time customer at Kirkham's, I was recently very disappointed at my first ever experience with a warranty repair / credit there. It is for a pair of Vasque hiking shoes I'd bought in June of this year. In short, the heel cup wore out after about four months of light hiking (see photo attached) and was starting to give me blisters. The shoes are unwearable for that reason.
Vasque comes with a 1 year warranty. I took the shoes in on Nov 14th and was told that they had to be mailed back to Vasque for their opinion. I was told it would take a few weeks, and that this is Vasque's mandated policy. This was surprising since it forced me to either buy a new pair of shoes that day or use a far inferior backup shoe I have at home. Not everyone has a spare pair to use. I opted to use my backups.
I also asked the woman in Cust service if she knew that her prime competitor, REI, carries Vasque and they'd never not issue a credit the day defective product was returned. She said she wasn't aware of REI's policy. If I can buy Vasque at REI (which I can; REI carries a lot of Vasque shoes and boots) and return it for full credit under warranty there on the day I bring it in, then obviously Kirkham's policy is its own and not the manufacturer's or Kirkham's is getting hosed by Vasque by having this inferior policy at their store.
Fast forward to this week. I've not received any communication from Kirkham's after almost a month, so I called the customer service desk. After being on hold for about 5 minutes I was told she couldn't find my paperwork and that the manager would call me the following day. She confirmed my contact info. That was four days ago, and I've still not received a call from the manager or anyone at Kirkham's.
I always want to see the local vendor succeed whenever possible, which is why I've spent almost $2,000 over the years at Kirkham's. But this continuing poor service has lost me as a customer there. At this point, I'd just like to have Kirkham's contact me and issue a credit on my card. Store credit will not do. If that doesn't happen in another few days I'll just open a dispute through VISA, which doubles the manufacturer's warranty anyway.
I hope Kirkham's gets their policy in line with REI's soon so at least they don't remain in that competitive disadvantage in the marketplace.

Kirkham's is awesome. Whenever I'm in SLC from Colorado Springs, it's always on my list of places to visit. I love my SpringBar tent.

High end outdoor gear. Friendly staff. They let my dumb ass who forgot my bike lock bring my bike into the store while i shopped for a new winter jacket. They treated me like a human being even though I'm white, single and unmarried. Very grateful ;D

Shop here for outdoor stuff. Top notch quality for camping and backpacking. They carry (and repair!) Springbar Tents. They offer a discount for bulk purchases of freeze dried meals, 5-15%.
They carry gransfors bruks axes as well. Lots of great stuff.response / report this review -

A great local company that knows what they're doing when it comes to outdoor gear. If you're looking to get a bag fixed or get the parts to fix it yourself, they've got you covered with buckles, tri-glides, etc at a decent rate. Their staff is generally friendly and knowledgeable. The gear that they build is top quality, and worth the price you pay for it. The other stuff they carry is generally priced on par with the market elsewhere, and of good quality. Only reason I give them four stars instead of five is that they often feel understaffed, and their selection is sometimes a bit sparse. That said, they are dog friendly (a big plus if you've got a pooch), unlike another less-local outdoor supply store that carries very similar items

This is a hidden gem on State Street. Reminds me of how stores used to be. They are small enough that they care but big enough to have tons to offer. The prices are a little higher but they carry quality products - some that are hard to find around town.
