Excellent selection of treats from Germany! From candies, beers, beverages, and other treats. They also have fresh sausages that are wonderful. The one must have item from here are their rum balls. It's chocolate cake soaked in rum balled up and covered with chocolate.
I had the Belgian waffle with pecans. I was a little disappointed that it came with cold packaged syrup and not hot nor homemade. At least if it was hot it would been better. My wife had the potato pancakes and they were good though. Breakfast was still good nonetheless.
The service was great, personal were able to describe the products, I gained 16 pounds just looking at the selection of pastry. The restaurant is equally good. Never had a bad meal.
Nice little joint. We predictably had Ruebens which were better than average in that the cuts of meat were lean. They gladly substitute German potato salad for chips. The selection of German sweets was a nice bonus. This is also one of the few places in Helen with its own parking, though it's practically downtown, so we walked.
We had the best breakfast at Hofer's. I had ham and cheese on top of grilled bread from their bakery, served with scrambled eggs. Delicious! My husband had a dish I can't pronounce, but it is apples slices, pan-fried, and dipped in cinnamon sugar. Absolutely wonderful! Also, I am picky about coffee, and I truly enjoyed the coffee they serve. Definitely recommend!
Food is average. Had hot turkey sandwich. Just deli meat placed on flat top. Chicken salad was slightly better They have an insanely poor system for seating. Got there when dining room had only 1 table being used. They made us and 15 others wait to sit for close to 15 minutes with every table open. Only 4 of the 17 waiting waited it out. It is not worth it. Deli and and bakery are nice, restaurant not so much.
Stopped here for breakfast. About a 30 min wait on a Sunday morning 9:10 to 9:40am. Our ticket price for 1 French Toast meal, a side of sausage, 2 Biscuits and gravy meals, 2 coffees, and 1 fresh orange juice was $32 total. The French Toast was good with 4 thick halves. The biscuits and gravy were very filling with lots of sausage gravy on 4 biscuit halves. We left feeling full and if in town again would probably go again. Btw the bakery was in the front when walking in and it look so good. We got some apple fritters to go on the way out.
Do not leave Helen without paying Hofer's a visit. If you go the first day you arrive in Helen, I am sure you will want to eat here everyday. The breakfast was the best I have ever had. Simple and delicious dishes. Get there early or you may have to wait for a table, but trust me it is well worth it. Hofer's has a store and bakery in the front. You can certainly pass the time picking out all the sweets you are going to want to take with you. The staff is very friendly. Our server was Marva. She is super sweet and attentive. Make sure you plan plenty of activities to work off the calories because I promise you will want two of everything. I can't wait to go back. I think I would drive to Helen just to eat at Hofer's.
Best breakfast I have ever had. We got to the bakery just as it had opened, so we were seated right away. The staff was super friendly and worked hard to make sure all the guests were taken care of. I had the eggs toast and ham with Swiss cheese. For such a simple dish, it was wonderful. We of course had to get a waffle and it also was delicious. Marva is an excellent server. Very sweet and attentive. The dinning room did fill up quickly, so get there early. Even if you have to wait it is well worth it. Best in Helen for breakfast and I can't wait to try out lunch and some bakery items.
This food is so delicious! My German friends recommended this place and out of all the places in Helen this one is genuinely actually authentic German food! Will definitely be returning with my group again soon!
Love this Bakery and we always wait for a table because it's the best place in Helen to eat breakfast and lunch. We go there every time we are in town and but extras to take home. :)
Great food and service! Our family of 6 were stuffed after having breakfast here. Bread was awesome!
Hofer's is a quaint bakery and restaurant with a small shopping area for souvenirs and imported German food items. The display case of baked goods is very impressive, and I enjoyed looking around in the vault area. I didn't eat at the restaurant, but had a fresh pretzel and it was delicious - exactly the texture and flavor a soft pretzel should be. It was a little pricey, but I'd definitely go again to try some of the other wonderful looking treats. The covered terrace is a great spot to have a snack and watch the horse drawn carriages and tourists pass by on a nice day.
I have ordered Hofers sample bread case by mail, what a disappointment. Although it only took a day and 1/2 to arrive, the bread is anything but crusty. It looked old and dried out. The same is true for the french rolls. The bread did not look anything like the pictures. German bread is a dense and close-textured loaf. What I have received is not.
Will not order there again.
