They say in life you get what you pay for and I for one agree with that.
On numerous occasions Dr Mertz has stopped what she was doing no matter it be in the middle of the night or a weekend, or a beautiful Sunday such as today where she and her family had plans to go to the lake but put those plans off long enough to come to work and remove a fishing hook that my great dane had gotten stuck in his mouth and cheek.
Sharla and I are blessed to have not only a great friend in Dr Mertz, but a fantastic vet.
I know some say she is to expensive, but In my opinion she is the best money can buy and am forever grateful she chose to do what she does.
Dr Mertz and her staff are the most down to earth and compassionate people when it comes to animals that I have ever met and I just want to say thanks for always being there for us and our four legged family.response / report this review -

The staff are professional and welcoming but I can't in good conscious leave this place a positive review. I took my dog to get what should have been a standard spay. I am now aware it was performed by a temporary doctor who was covering for Dr. Smith during her maternity leave. A few months after the initial operation my dog went into heat which I assumed was a UTI because my dog was supposed to be spayed and couldn't possibly be in heat, right? 3 visits, 2 surgeries, 1 week of waiting for blood work to get processed from Cornell university and my dog is finally spayed. After the second surgery Dr. Mertz's explanation was "somehow we just messed up and forgot to take the second ovary out". That was literally what she said to me. I couldn't believe it.
In my mind that is unacceptable from a licensed veterinarian. If they can mess up something that should be as standard as a spay then I hate to think how they would handle a more complex procedure. Even though they refunded the bloodwork costs and completely covered the cost of the second surgery (they were prepared to charge my girlfriend $530) I would be hesitant to take my dog there again unless it's an emergency. I don't want her to relive all that trauma.response / report this review -

Dr. Mertz is the only vet I will trust with my animals. Her group and her have saved three of my dogs lives the last 8 years. She has made my world a better place for my dogs and I with love and dedication she puts in taking care of them. Thank you so much!

Went to help my mom put her cat down, some of the worst bedside manner I've ever seen. We were greeted with a "Hi good morning! Oh, I guess not for you guys then haha" and the doctor forgot to bill for something when she was supposed to so she plopped that down in front of us while we were trying to say goodbye. Just over all very unsympathetic and impolite

Had to bring our female corgi in on an emergency having never used this place before. Typically I've always driven my pack clear over to Lee's Summit to my trusted Vet of many years. But, after jumping off of the bed, our little girl acted like she had sprained or done worse to her little leg.
Getting all the way over to LS in morning rush hour wasn't an option so we went down the street to have her looked at. Now, I worked for my current Vet for five years and I also have an animal science degree. I'm not completely stupid to most Vet - world things. My husband drops her off and they end of keeping her all day. They shoot x-rays on their ancient - hand-develop-the-films machine. (Shoot them, remove the films by hand and stick them in the developer machine.) Then called us and said they needed to shoot the films again. Then another call saying nothing was broken, probably just sore or slightly sprained. At this point she's been there the entire day.
I waited for 35 minutes before the Vet came in after dealing with the moderately rude receptionist. She was very awkward and immediately opened up about how long her day was and how she was supposed to go home by noon for vacation, but was still there with tons of patients in the back, etc. She pulls the films out and lights them up to show me that our Corgi's leg was fine but that the elbow was oddly formed, which was for some reason, a concern to her. Yes, their elbows are oddly formed. She is a Corgi. (This was also said by my Vet when I told him this.) They have oddly formed, misshaped elbows. Then she points out this area in her lungs that didn't look great on the film. Casted shadow/foggy looking and said she was concerned about that. Obviously that's concerning to hear from someone but she's never had any breathing issues outside of allergies that's she always had since she was a pup.
She wanted to look more into it and I shut her down at that point because the way she approached it and the way she wanted to do all of these tests and whatnot. More tests, more money to someone I'm not impressed by and don't want to switch to given what I had seen so far. I said I would like to transfer the films to my Vet to have them reviewed and then have them sent back to her. She said no, because they were her only copies from her old machine and she has to keep them.
At this point I said I'd follow up with my Vet and needed to be on my way. She told me that it would be awhile because Sadie had been sedated all day and she had to reverse it. Why? Why was my corgi, who has no history of aggression or any issues at the Vet, sedated for an entire day? "I had to sedate her for the x-rays." That was the answer I received. The x-rays were shot in the morning hours. There is no reason she should have been sedated for the entire day. And she's never been sedated for an x-ray before either. Yes, some dogs turn into assholes at the Vet behind closed doors, but I have always seen her behave well and been complimented on how well behaved she always is.
After all of this we went home after paying a hefty bill and pain pills which she didn't really need by the next day. She was using the leg after an hour of being home.
Following up with my Vet the next day, we reshot the x-rays on her chest, with a newer-digital machine and her lungs and throat were crystal clear with no issues to be found. We also reshot her leg and elbow and no issues or deformities were to be found. It was just a "normal" shaped Corgi leg. My Vet was concerned about how she was evaluated and how we were treated overall. Expressing concern over the day long sedation. Needless to say there's no way we'll ever use this clinic in Gardner again or would we ever recommend it. After this experience our neighbors told us that was why they used the Vet on the other side of town or Olathe after having such bad experiences at the Gardner Vet.response / report this review -

I want to let everone know about my experience that i have had in looking and finding a DVM for the care of my best friend Ellie Mae.
Ellie is a big part of my life and part of my business. I recently divorced. Ellie has become my travel companion and is with me 24 hours a day. She travels and goes to work with me daily.
I recently have been looking for someone in the Olathe /Gardner area to care for my puppy. I have visited 3 different Animal Hospitals in the area . Every place i went to i tried to ask questions about the spay procedure. I was treated like i was ordering a big mac . I was shown a menu.
I stopped by with ellie. The women at the front counter were friendly. Explained the procedure, went over cost , explained options extra measures, medicines, and test. They also offered micro chipping to me .
They weighed ellie , played with her and left me with the feeling that ellie was going to be cared for like my best friend and apart of the family.
This was all in the first meet and greet!!!!
I left that day with the feeling that they teally cared!!!
Day of surgery
I brought ellie in at the time set, they checked us in and set a time for me to return.
I told the girl that checked us in how nervous i was for her . She told me that she was going told be fine smiled and said that she would look over her . I felt at ease.
The show stopper
This just shocked me .
I recieved a call a few hours later from Dr. Eileen's staff. She went over the surgery, her condition and put me totally at ease.
I own a service based company so i pick up on certain things. Gardner Animal Hospital is doing it right!!!
They have a great staff!!! Treat owners and animals with respect care and set the bar so high for other animal hospitals !!!!
I recommend Dr. Eileen and all staff for anything to do your animals.
Other hospitals tried to sell price ,and i felt like i was stupid for asking so many questions .
And in the end when its about your best friend money is not a factor its service and care!!!!
Great job Dr. Eileen and staff.
