The Detroit Zoo is my favorite zoo. It is fun for all ages. The membership prices are reasonable and there is a wide variety of different animals. When you get in all the exhibits are included with your ticket. There are no extra charges, unless you wanted to see a movie or get food. I also like that they allow you to bring your own lunch. Just don't bring a cooler. When make sure you look at the penguin house.

I visited Wild Lights at the Detroit Zoo. It was spectacular! I loved how they changed the direction that you walk so that you have a different experience from the start. Of course there were new amazing light features paired with lights from the past, plenty of hot cocoa, snack/ food stops, and a miniature ice skating rink. There's a lot to see. Try not to go during such a popular/ common time so that your stroll is more relaxing.

I am a fan of going to the zoo. I have been to quite a few across the U.S. and the Detroit Zoo is one of the best. The exhibits are great for the animals and they allow a more natural way of viewing the animals. The only change that I would make would be adding more themes to different areas. It would be helpful to decorate pathways more and really make people feel like they are in Africa or South America.

When my son was young, and even before he was born, we always had a membership to the Detroit Zoo. The animals are fascinating and it's a great place to walk, see beautiful gardens, and enjoy a fine day. This time, I went to see the new (1-year-old) Peguinarium. It combines Penguin biology with history, which I loved, particularly because my son, when young, was engrossed in the topic, Sir Ernest Shackleton's Antarctic Journey. The penguins are housed in a large, glass-walled enclosure that is viewable from one side and the other. To get from the beginning to the end, visitors walk a ramp through a simulation experience that was very well designed to feel and look like a ship, Shackleton's Endurance. The story is gripping, hard to believe, and deeply moving. I won't give it away. You'll have to go see it for yourself. The friend I took and I thought it quite wonderful to tell a true, heroic tale within the context in which it took place, surrounded by 83 penguins. Four species are on display: King, Gentoo, Rock Hopper, and Macaroni. And, in true modern Zoo style there's a glass tunnel that allows underwater views of penguins swimming, playing, diving in, and hopping or sliding out. Tremendously fun!

The penguin house is AWESOME. Beautiful exhibit that is a must see. Throughout the zoo, the tags on the cages to show who is rescued and from where is great information. This is a great place to hold an event. The zoo is continually being updated. It is VERY busy spring - fall on the weekends, so get there when they open. If you have kids, take the train!

Such a wonderful place to enjoy the day with friends and family. The staff is very helpful friendly and energetic. They have a very wide variety of life animal exhibits from Flamingos, lions, giraffes, camels, all the way to the arctic region that contain polar bears, penguin (even and arctic fox!) and much more.
To make your experience even more enjoyable around holiday times, they update for nice seasonal activities such as Halloween displays, activities, and candy giveaways. This is a great way to spend a day with the people close to you to enjoy the weather and getplenty of walking exercise!response / report this review -

Fun day out for the family. It is a lot of walking so little kids may not be able to make it through the whole park. If you plan on eating there, bring money as it is not a cheap place to visit. Instead, pack a lunch, snacks and bring water bottles. There are free water bottle filing stations throughout the park! It is clean and friendly. Don't be afraid to ask questions the Zookeepers are very knowledgeable and ready to answer all your questions! You pay for parking when you buy your ticket.

The Detroit Zoo always delivers a great experience. There are less animals than some bigger zoos but quality makes up for it. The new penguin experience is amazing, there's nothing that compares to it! They are also one of the few zoos that have chimpanzees. If you arrive early be sure to check and see if they are running the giraffe encounter, for $5/person you can hand feed a giraffe! The zoo was very clean and well maintained. Be aware that they do not sell bottled water but do have about 20 refillable water bottle stations, awesome to see them reducing waste, I hope more zoos follow this example. Overall a great experience, can't wait to return!

The zoo has come a long way with improvements and general maintenance over the last 5 years, everyone in our group had fun. There are food cafes throughout the zoo to eat at and plenty of restrooms. A lot of the animals were out and about the day we were there. The penguin exhibit is very nice and a must see for all visitors. The train cost $3 extra but was fun, the train should be routed so you can see some animals. We enjoy our membership and stop in every so often for a couple hours.

Went with family on this trip. I am not one for animals in captivity, so it's always hard for me to enjoy places like the zoo or fairs. With that said, I must admit that this zoo is extremely clean and maintained very well. A great majority of the animals have ample space to roam as well.
They have healthy food options and it is perfect for a day trip; not too big, not too small. The gardens and flowers throughout property are amazingly beautiful. The staff is really knowledgeable and excited to talk about the animals. The train is also a nice featurewe chose to take it to back of the park and make our way up.response / report this review -

Paid almost $60 for the "full experience" for my and my husband.
Cons: Carousel was shut down so we couldn't ride it. Mediocre, cold food was $28 for me and my husband with no free refills. No signs as to where to order at the arctic cafe so we just stood there trying to find someone to help us out. We wanted to feed the giraffes but as soon as we got to the exhibit in the very back of the zoo, we had to go all the way to the front of the zoo to purchase the ticket. Then once we got all the way back to the giraffe exhibit, we missed the feeding times. Wish we could have just paid there and not waste time and money. Bathrooms were disgusting. Some staff was unknowledgeable. The parking was confusing because the big parking lot was for "members only" but with a small sign, so as soon as we walked all the way to the entrance, we had to go all the way back to park somewhere else or we will have to purchase the "members" package.
Pros: Polar bear exhibit was fun, same with the penguin exhibit. We did run into some workers who stood by the animals and tell you some facts about them. Better than the Lansing Potters Park zoo.response / report this review -

It was nice to go. Saw a peacock in the wolf exhibit. The wolf howled and next thing you know, hee sees the peacock and storms to it and the peacock hit the window. The wolf came back with the peacock in his mouth then was eating it. Then later we went on the bridge and saw a mommy duck with her new ducklings. Looked like they were just born. Also saw a cool bird getting chased by a black bird and the cool bird was making noises. Also saw a chimpanzee with her baby. She was cleaning her baby. So funny to see the gorilla looking in the window wanting to go inside.

Great Saturday option with kids.
They added Grizzly Bear behind Giraffe enclosure no signage for it just continue from there and hang left. Its hidden kind of but the grizzly swimming and playing with his ball was the best thing to see today. :)response / report this review -

In the past, you'd have to roll the dice on seeing many of animals in their exhibits here. But things are changing at the Detroit in such a good way. The new penguin exhibit is so sleek and cool. You get right up close to the cute guys. I'm very excited to see the new wolf exhibit too. A nice warm fall day is the best time to go. You can easily spend 2-3 hrs here and be entertained and happy.

New penguin place is awesome. The bears are also very nice. Not a lot of animals, but very beautiful place to walk around. Consider the membership as it may pay it off after your third visit, depends on the size of your family.
