It is hard to move away from a place where everyone knows your name. Yes, a cliche and reference, but ultimately true for a store where it's easy to form a connection with the employees and owner, when visiting on a semi-regular basis. The employees are always thinking of ways to entertain customers with events, and the banter between customers is friendly as well as welcoming! Going to other card shops and game stores just makes me wish I was back at Checkmate.

When I first got into Magic in college this is the store my friend recommended. I went to my first prerelease here and boy was I nervous as that would have been the second Magic product I ever bought. But I enjoyed it! The staff was friendly, saying hi when we came in and asking if we needed anything (Which I saw them do to every customer any time I was there) and even better, the community was understanding of a new player at his first event.
Since then I went to every prerelease I could at this store until I finally graduated and moved away. I went from a player who was new to magic that always went 0-4 to a player that could consistently go 3-1 at this store and I loved every bit of it.
One of my favorite parts of the store is all the games they have available to demo. I would recommend this store to anyone looking to get into either board games, D&D, TCG games like Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, or pokemon, or anyone who already is into any of it.
I'll end with my favorite story from this store. The first constructed event I went to for Magic was Game Day at this store. The deck I brought wasn't good, as I didn't have a lot of money at the time. There were nine players in the event, and if you placed within the top 8 you got a special promo card. Meaning one player would be placed in 9th and not get a promo. I was that lucky player who went 0-4 and placed 9th, which was what I expected. But the staff was nice enough to give me some old promos out of their personal collection since I had missed out on the promo at Game Day. That's what the staff here is like. They care about making people happy. I'll definitely miss this place now that I am gone and will always go back if I am in the area.response / report this review -

I have spent my entire college career with my friends and I going to checkmate. My friends an I have had some of the greatest moments of our college career at checkmate. Amazing and knowledgeable staff that were always reading to answer questions about any game you were playing whether it be magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, DnD or any boardgame in existence, they knew how to help you better understand. They also had a "testing" section which was awesome for finding out if you liked a game before you purchased it. Great place and would highly recommend for any experienced and new gamers.

Great place to play Magic, D&D, etc. They offer a decent selection of gaming products. Staff is generally knowledgeable about game merchandise and they offer several organized play events.

Love this store! Great place to play games like magic or dice masters or a simple board game. People that work there are always friendly and
have great suggestions for games or tips on how to improve my strategies. However if I was looking for a new game to play other than magic or dice masters their prices on board games are a little pricey compared to some other places in the Toledo area or online. It could be as simple as not being up to date on every game they have on their shelves which is a lot. That's really the only reason I'm taking one star off my review. Other than that great store and very family friendly as well.response / report this review -

Always the latest and greatest games I recommend going on Tuesdays to play new and exciting games. Ken the owner will always show you how to play and bring people together to play.

Everyone at Checkmate is always helpful and nice. They're my preferred Friendly Local Gaming Store. They have great events, and are always able to suggest new games for us to try.

Great selection of games. Very knowledgeable staff always willing to help explain how a game is played and quick with answers to questions. I have sent them quite a few Facebook messages asking about games in stock and if they can order something for me and they always respond quickly and do their best to order what I am looking for or see if they have it in stock. Thanks checkmate for being one of the best games stores in toledo.

WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE EVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there was a woman the first time i went about a year ago. I was selling a jace mind sculptor foil to them and she tried to say the new card that i was willing to sell them was worth five bucks. I said screw it and went too old school gaming got 140ish for it. But the woman at checkmate laughed at my husband and i and told us are card was worth crap and she wouldn't pay more than five for anything i brought up.
I shrugged it off then yesterday for some odd reason my husband said lets take some cards to check mate. We pull our cards out of our card binder and take them up there in a card box. And some jerk with long hair laughed at us and told us we should use sleeves on our BRAND NEW CARDS!!!!!!!!! TOOK them to the game room and got 20 bucks for what i thought would be worth 15..
TODAYYYYYY again trying to be a forgiveing person took my BRAND NEW cards in the brand new binder i just bought just to see what they thoughtAGAINNNN they tried telling me that my cards were too torn apart to buy. I laughed. I told them you would say that to anyone wouldent you. See i went to walmart and bought a new $20 box of cards and sifted through them and put them in the binder just to see what they would do.. My cards were less than a day old.
I suggest if your looking for a good gameing store with great atmisfere that you go to the game room or old school gameing because i have never once had this rude problem there.,response / report this review -
