Such a pleasant experience . we loved the atmosphere and the wonderful staff. Some of the best wine we've tasted too.
Great place glad I finally stopped in. Great tasting wines and a great staff.
Amazing selection of extremely delicious wines. Their desert wines are the best.
Wonderful staff.
You never know what you find off the beaten path!
For someone that is highly opinionated about wine, I never thought that I would find myself writing this review. Wine is a product of the earth, grapes, weather, a lot of know-how, and I cannot leave out Luck.
California, Oregon, France, Italy, Germany, Australia are the primary wine destinations that have always made sense to me. There are even surprises from Switzerland, Spain, Greece that all deserve mention.
However, never and I mean never would believe that I would be sitting in my living room thinking about the truly impressive wine tasting my wife and had in Haslett, MI, a place that is in no were Mid-Michigan. So many times, I have endured a wine tasting of Michigan wines. Until yesterday, the spit bucket was the only place that those wines belonged.
Yesterday, after enjoying the start of the Michigan art fair season in East Lansing, my wife and I decided to visit a winery that is just east of the Campus of Michigan State University named Burgdorf’s Winery. I was sure that we were in for another miserable one hour tasting of Michigan wine that should be used for other purposes than enjoyment with food.
Oh, my god was I wrong. Who would think that a winery in Mid-Michigan could produce a high-quality product that an amateur sommelier with a reasonable palate would highly endorse! Certainly, I never thought that I would be writing these words. Burgdorf’s is a diamond in the middle of a slurry of fakes. They use fruit from many Michigan sources including the farms at Michigan State University. But it’s the magic that Deb Burgdorf brings to making a great product that really stands out. Specially, Burgdorf’s has three reds stood out as true gems.
The 2013 Finlay’ reserve named for their first grandson was a master blend of Cabernet, Cabernet Franc and Merlot. Light in color and lower in alcohol than California blends, with great fruit and a perfect finish. This wine would be delightful with charcuterie or any meaty fish.
The 2012 Chancellor reminded me of a fabulous lunch of Italian cold meats and cheese I had in Bologna Italy, drinking an impressive Sangiovese. Any Italian would be proud to serve this wine with a great Tuscany meal.
Most of all I have to say that the 2011 Pinot Noir which is 100% Pinot although lighter in alcohol than Oregon or California wines was big in fruit and a terrific nose of berries that is every bit as good as anything on the market today at a comparable price.
You just never know what you’re going to find off that beaten path. Yesterday was one of those truly interesting days where the off beaten path produced a memorable experience.
First things first do not be put off when you pull up and realize this is a home. Im serious. This place was really really nice. We were greeted by the owner and give the low down on how they got to be where they are tody. The decor was a mix of Michigan wine related wine items from slate mitten cutting boards to chic insulated wine purses. I recommend doing the $5 tasting and going from there, my favorite was "Perfection" and their "Ice Wine". After out tasting we purchased a glass and moved to the back patio, it was so quiet and peaceful. I can't imagine what it is like when the trees are all full. I can't recommend this place more. Well worth the stop off of the freeway. Can't wait to go back
I can't say enough NICE THINGS about this place! I loved every wine I sampled today! :)
Great local winery. My wife loves their Michigan Perfection and I'm partial to their semi-sweet oaked white. Their staff are awesome here.
Absolutely love this place. One of only two wineries run by women in Michigan. The couple has been doing this for 11 years now. The location offers a very intimate setting since this is their home they are opening up to the public.
