We stayed last July, looking for a local place to stay on our way back from Duluth. Owners were awesome, turns out they are from same city we live in. We had a great time, even the dog was cool. Rooms were clean, clearly the owners are putting alot into making this a northern destination. We will be returning this summer. Sorry for the late review.

We had such a great time! We are a big supporter of mom-n-pops and this place is one of the best places we've stayed. We booked online and found their website and room descriptions to be very accurate. Our room was clean and spacious for our family. The owners, Justin and Brittany are very friendly and helpful. I'm not sure why anyone would say otherwise really. Everything we asked for, they took care of right away and with care. The hot tub was nice and hot.. and the kids loved the pool! There is a local restaurant that delivers to their bar, which was really helpful one night when we really didn't feel like going anywhere. Overall, it felt like home. Highly recommended if you like unique places. Hope to return!

This place was in a great location relative to local ski hills, and right down the street from the regional airport where we landed. Location was perfect; with only a 15 min drive to Indianhead/Blackjack.
Uncomfortable beds, but rooms were clean. The place could use a little updating cosmetically, but overall it was nice. The bar area was great, staff/people were nice, and the resident dog (Copper) was friendly.
We were disappointed that breakfast wasn't "encouraged". Apparently it was offered, as advertised, but the owner was apprehensive about it when asked and politely asked us if we could go in town for breakfast instead. I guess nobody but our group asked for it and the owner didn't want to go through all that work for 4 people. Understandable.
The pool and hot tub were nice, but the hot tub had some dirt/debris at the bottom. It could use a good cleaning after Friday/Saturday nights.
Definitely would stay again for our next ski trip.response / report this review -

We (2 couples) came up for a three night snowboarding trip. We had an absolutely wonderful time. There is a nice Jacuzzi and very large pool for the kids. A continental breakfast for $5 is about what you would expect: waffles, cereal, bagels, fruit, bars, juice, oatmeal, etc. There's a downstairs bar (cash only) generally run by the husband. They also have frozen pizza if you need a last minute meal.
The rooms were fine and about what you'd expect from a smaller family owned lodge. Most people were there to snowmobile but a good chunk was there hitting the slopes as well. Some of the walls were thin so just be aware that you can hear others if they're loud. It was a pretty diverse group of other friendly lodge stayers while we were there (from families to guys weekend).
We wanted to give 5 stars because of how great the Husband and Wife were. They are more than happy to accommodate just about anything. The price is hard to beat and the atmosphere is wonderful.response / report this review -

The lodge is family owned, do not let age fool you the owners know what they are doing! They live within the lodge and tend to guests as they need while giving space so you don't feel like you're being watched. The guest quarters are exceptional, each room is individually heated so everyone is always comfortable! The room we stayed in 1B was very clean and free of bugs. They provide cleaning services unless you put up a 'do not disturb' sign, they are respectful to one's privacy. They also provide breakfast options : continental breakfast ($5 per person add-on) or their breakfast pasty (pass-tee; $7) which is freshly made every morning by 8am. They are currently under renovation for our benefit so please note the Mimosas/Bloody Mary breakfast option is currently unavailable as of Sep, 29, '17 but will be back after updates! Until then you can always head downstairs to the bar lounge where they offer a great selection of alcohol as well as entertainment. If nobody is there just let the owner know and they'd be more than happy to open it up for you! This lodge also offers outdoor lounging ;whether it's right out your back door to the benches or just a short walk back to the fire pit! The atmosphere is very serene and peaceful, everyone respects their peers and you can't put a price on that! Well worth the price and the only way to stay when far from home! Was very satisfied with service. Rooms are a little dated but the price is great and location is awesome for a getaway. Paths to hike behind the lodge were great. Being able to bring our dog was a huge perk. Will definitely book here again if we travel that way.

Stayed here a few years ago in high school with the ski and snowboard club. The rooms were nice and clean, a kitchen in the rooms on the bottom floor staff were friendly and it was a nice place to stay for a couple nights

So disappointed in this place. Husband and wife team run the lodge, which sounds great but they are definitely not on the same page and have conflicting policies. Husband is super accommodating but the wife seems irritated that anyone is there. Full house and at least four people were waiting for them to open the lobby area to check out, they ended up leaving out the back door. Breakfast- While we were willing to pay the $5 for the continental breakfast, the lobby (and that area) never opened until after 11:30am. No coffee, no food and no service- remember this place is in the middle of nowhere.
Rooms- the bed pillows were stained and the staples that hold the mattress pads down came off which my friend stepped on. The showers are falling apart also. Since they live on site, I was disappointed that the rooms were not in good condition.
I gave two stars because the lodge outdoor area is beautiful and the husband was so nice.response / report this review -

I absolutely love it here! Justin and Brittany do an excellent job at keeping this place going. Plenty of fun for all ages! Highly recommended. This has been our go to snowmobile trip destination for two years now

Jason and Brittany thank you so much for all your hospitality this last weekend for the wedding I had a blast and thank you for letting me camp out at your property it was absolutely amazing. I cant wait to come back up to Black River Lodge to visit again! :D
