  The new Ackerman course is a nice redesign by Pete Dye, similar but not quite as well done as The Fort in Indianapolis, and is pricey unless you have a discount card. Pace of play can be an issue here, especially if you get behind a slow group. The rangers actually advise groups that they do NOT have to let faster players through. If you play as a single, you will not be made to feel welcome. The Kampen Course has some typical Pete Dye gimmicks (huge waste areas, hidden hazards, cliff-edged fairways, long forced carries.) Long hikes from greens to the next tee cut down the walkability.

  Agree with other review that said Kampen is 1) an excellent course, 2) a very challenging course, and 3) rather expensive. I'm not a great golfer, maybe not even a good golfer, and that course ate me up. Ackerman is much more my speed. I enjoy a parkland course like Ackerman more so than a links-style course like Kampen (just personal preference). Both are very well maintained, and club house staff is professional. Marking down 1 start because: 1) cost of Kampen, 2) for the 1st half of the summer of 2016, their online tee time reservation system wasn't working, and 3) the golf pros listed on their website are challenged to return phone calls.

  I had a terrible experience here at Birck Boilermaker Golf Course. The staff at this place were incredibly short, rude, and mean to my friends and I while we played here. They literally made fun of our golf ability and thought it was hilarious. I played at Kampen, and that will be my 1 and only time ever playing there. Hundreds of golf course in America and surrounding areas, stay away from this one.

  Two courses here that are very different. The Kampen course is toughvery tough. Bring your A game because you won't find any forgiveness here. Some of the holes are very long and unless you're a truly good golfer (not just in your mind), birdies are very difficult to attain. Pat yourself on the back if you par any hole. To give you an idea, there is one hole where a bridge crosses the water. As we were passing over, we saw a golf bag full of clubs someone had tossed in. Frustrated much? The fees for playing this course are a little on the high side too and do not have a discount for weekday play. Play and ride for 18 is $75 for the public.
  
  Ackerman Hills (or the south course) is much more playable for an average golfer like me. It's shorter, and none of the holes are unreasonably long. There are lots of beautiful old trees giving the course more of a park-like feel than Kampen and it's possible to make birdies on some of the holes. Greens fees are also cheaper, about half of what it is at Kampen.
  
  Both courses are beautifully maintained and the staff in the Pro Shop is friendly and helpful. Call for a tee time as the place is usually pretty crowded and walk ons may be turned away.
  
  Five stars for maintenance and friendliness of staff. Minus one star for the cost to play @ Kampen. There are other courses in the area with the same challenge that are much cheaper to play.

  Along with the near by Coyote Crossing this is the best golf in the area. World class golf on Kampen. Beautiful views on Ackerman.
