There is so much to visit! Winery's, chocolate stores, bakery, popcorn shop, kids store, rock and fossil store, antiques, meat shop, pizza, general store, clothing stores, ect. I reccomend millwright hotel. Great food, awesome rooms, great staff and awesome artifacts from the woolen mill. Amana is very welcoming and a great place to visit

This is a cute little town that you could visit. It has a good history of how settlers lived here. Cute coffee shops, art galleries, and other shopping places make it modern while preserving the history.

This is a mist go to place if you find yourself in Eastern Iowa or you like an old world vacation. The hotel Millwright is actually the original wollen mill that the German settlers used to make fabric. They have preserved as much of the old building as possible keeping the modern look to a minimum but still giving you a wonderful place to stay. A plus in my book. This is my wife and I 35 wedding anniversary.

A definite destination location but fun even if you can only spend one day. ANDyou can have just as much fun and not spend any money (though it is a challenge). So many fascinating shops and goodies to eat. Beautiful place to stay and ride bicycles around too. A trip worth repeating. Beautiful flower pots and interesting yard ornaments full of flowers too.

The host was very kind and gave us suggestions of where to take our kiddos. We walked all the way to the top of the visitors center to get a feel for the top of an old corn crib. The rugs on the wall remind me of the ones my grandma made. We walked around as a family and checked out the art. This is a must return. I loved the whirly gigs, the fossil rock shop and the art. I had my car and not the van!!

Had so much fun with my gal pals shopping in Amana. Great shops, especially the wood furniture shop and the woolen shop. Cute boutiques. Loved walking around. Everyone is so friendly.

It's the Amana Colonies! On the Iowa bucket list for myself and my girlfriend, we recently made our first trip here. One could definitely spend multiple days across several of the colonies and never see it all. Redundancy will definitely be seen here so keep that in mind as you begin your adventure.

Checklist: Millstream Brau House, anything pickled, walking the streets and taking in the beauty.

The atmosphere is welcoming and aesthetic, the food is fresh and delicious, and the shops have such great variety of items to explore. My friend and I made sure to eat at a different restaurant for each meal, definitely worth it! We took a drive around all of the colonies, which I think is worth doing at least once, with stops at the little shops along the way.

This is a quaint string of villages that have quite an interesting story to tell of how they survived and prospered over the years. This group of Amish people are unlike their namesake back East. They embraced mechanization which lead to the commercial walk in cooler as The Electrical Equipment Co. in Middle Amana, then into to Amana Refrigeration Inc. employing many individuals from the Colonies. It has since been sold to Whirlpool Corp in 2002 but still manufactures appliances in Middle Amana. The towns are different and you have to travel a little to find out the gems but it was an worth the effort. The people we met were super nice and their stories fun and educational. Takes some time and explore we enjoyed and think you will too. Take note, it's kind of a adult trip old things to see, lots of talk, trinkets to buy, and good food, not much for the kids to do.

Everyone should go here once. Definitely read up on the history of the colonies before arriving. If you use a walker of wheelchair, some things will be challenging or you can't do. Don't go during Oktoberfest unless you are doing Oktoberfest.

We greatly enjoyed our visit to the colonies. I wish we would have been able to spend multiple days here exploring each of the colonies.
It was totally worth the half hour detour on our way home. We'll see you next road trip!

Arrived in Amana at 10am on a Friday and hardly anything was open. We stopped by the visitors center and asked about the hours and the answer we got was "Most of them should be open now. If they're not, they will be soon. Or they may open later. Or not at all."
After spending a good amount of time browsing the General Store (the Christmas area is AWESOME) we came out to find most everything open except the fudge store. (It opened later in the afternoon and I did go in, but wasn't terribly impressed. No one acknowledged my presence even though I was the only customer, so I left.)
We spent the entire afternoon going from store to store and had a wonderful time tasting and shopping. Every other store was very hospitable, glad to see us and eager to answer questions and help. Loved the experience. Will have to go back again!

A former German communal society transitioning to more of an artist community. Great German food and festivals. A fun place to visit for the history, food and the antique shops. Oktoberfest there is great.

Interesting combination of historical buildings well maintained alongside present day commerce. A bit too much appeared to be imported goods brought in to "fill out" the inventory. I also wish there was more historical interpretation available. Nonetheless, an intriguing place to visit.

Always like perusing the stores and walking around several of the communities - each with something unique. A lot of places to eat a meal, or snack. Their live theatre has enjoyable shows. Let the kids explore at Edelstein's for rocks and fossils.

Cute tourist trap - pricing is high but based on the tourism i think that's why they get away with it. It's a very unique area to see though. As a local i do still go to some festivals but still feel it's a little over priced for our area.

The place is a treasure trove of history, food and crafts. Walking through looking at everything takes hours. Come when they give tours. Come when they have the candle displays around Christmas. Just come!

Little town with very quaint qualities. We love coming here for a stress-free getaway. Good Quilts is our favorite shop, but there is so much to experience here in all of the "colonies" that you could spend a week here and not be bored. Everyone is very friendly. The brewery has very good locally crafted beer, root beer, and cream soda. The meat shop in the East Colonies has great prices and quality goods. Overall for a weekend getaway, this place can't be beat. Highly recommended.
