I had the house special, Swedish meatballs, very good. For dessert I had the cherry pie, it was wonderful! The best I have had since my mother made it some 50 years ago. Do not pass up this pie, oh and the meatballs. Did I mention the pie?
This place is a must! Don't sweat the long wait - Al Johnson's is worth it! The place is so busy because it's great. It's not just the goats on the roof that attract their customers. The swedish meatballs, swedish pancakes, and other Swedish ethnic dishes are perfectly done Swedish comfort food! The meatballs are very close to what my mom always made for us when we were growing up. Can't overstate how delicious everything we had here was. The gift shop is also a great stop for tourists and collectors of souvenirs. The staff is excellent and friendly, and the atmosphere is like you would expect - a very warm and welcoming Scandinavian-themed family eatery. Such an excellent experience. We will be visiting Al Johnson's on our next Door County trip for sure!
We had been to this beautiful restaurant on Valentine's day for lunch. We were immediately seated and being vegetarian were given amazing options. We loved their Tomato bisque, it tasted so amazing. We ordered their grilled Havarti sandwich and Rolf's grilled veggie sandwich. Both were very yummy and filling. Loved the pickled beets and spinach in the former sandwich. Would definitely love to go there again and try their pancakes and pudding.
I recently visited the restaurant during the late morning hours. I was immediately seated and shortly after greeted by a server. I ordered the Swedish pancakes and Swedish meatballs. They arrived within 5 minutes. Both were excellent. My bill was a little over 10 dollars. During the Summer and Fall they are usually much busier and you can expect a wait to be seated. However, they have a gift shop and during the warm weather the goat's are on the roof to observe.
Always love the atmosphere. It's place you visit every now and then as a Wisconsinite on a get a way. It's a big local tourist spot. My waitress was quite nice this visit. My food is usually good but this visit my husband didn't enjoy his so much. He has in the past but this visit wasn't his favorite.
Excellent place. Cool experience, food was delicious!!! Definitely a destination type restaurant. Will be back, do recommend you make a stop when in Door county. Oh ya, goats are on the roof of the restaurant eating it's grass roof. (If that doesn't make you want to go, well Your just weird then)
Wonderful food! Loved the turkey oven roasted sandwich. Been there during a fall color weekend, was crowded. Minimum 45 minutes of wait time. Food arrived fast after order. Be prepared to wait.
The food is great and I usually have a good time at this Swedish themed restaurant. This time however, our server was horrendous. She spilled water on me twice (once on my phone and second on my meal). She rudely said "I am your server" when I was speaking to another server (I mentioned to my friends I wanted toast and the other server heard me and attempted to assist me). Furthermore, she gave the general impression that she was doing us a huge favor by serving us. We were not rude to this woman so I have no idea where her bad attitude and rude behavior came from. I have never had such a rude server in the 20+ years I've been visiting Al Johnson's.
Probably one of the best breakfasts I have ever had out. The Swedish pancakes special was amazing. It was served with a side of Swedish meatballs even. Coffee was excellent. Great decor. Awesome shop inside. We ate at the bar to avoid the hour long wait. The bar was adorable and there was no lack of service. Excellent experience all around.
Great comfort food that arrives fast. Also very cool to see the goats on the roof! The wait to get seated is usually very long, the dining room is quite crowded, and the last time we dined there we had to ask the waitress for several things that were included on our meals but that she forgot to bring. Definitely something to experience while in Sister Bay, especially if you like Swedish Meatballs and Swedish Pancakes!!

We were in town for a family wedding. We had been seated, and then learned our sister and her daughter were going to join us. Our table had plenty of room to add both of them - and we had not yet placed our order. The server and her manager both told us they could not join us because they weren't there when we were seated.
I understand a policy where you seat full parties. But a policy where a family member shows up at the restaurant and is refused service if they choose to sit at empty seats at a table where their family was seated only moments ago is just terrible service.
Disappointing when a business puts a policy before people.
Excellent service, Excellent food, Excellent atmosphere. Only problem was we had a very large group and so they seated us at an average of 5 people for every 4 - person table. Best Eggs Benedict I have had in a very long time.
Good place to visit if you are visiting door county. Kids love the goats on the roof and if you go to the back around 9:30 AM you can see them bring the goats over. Swedish pancakes taste good. Prices are not too high but not great either.
Best Eggs Benedict I have ever had. The meatballs are amazing and the staff is phenomenal. Service is amazingly fast and efficient. Couldn't ask for better service. The goats on the roof are so very cool. One of a kind place.
