Very friendly and knowledgeable owners, the rooms have a beautiful view of the garden and an old tram car. You should definitely stay here if you ever visit Te Anau.

A wonderfully attended to B and B. The details make the difference: towel warmers and large towels, nice selection for breakfast, knowledgeable staff. The lodge is one of cleanest I have seen. My impression was that it catered to an older population but that could be simply the time we visited. It is outside of town and requires short car ride for dinner.

I've always been fascinated by a group of British writers known as 'the inklings,' who included high profile authors (among which were JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis) who would read their unfinished works to one another, and enjoy a beer or two in the process. What does this have to do with a hotel review? well, the 2nd floor of this wonderful lodge has a study that reminds me of some sort of scene that the inklings would enjoy - educated, sophisticated, but where you feel at home. My wife and I loved this place. The owner, Mark, and the rest of the staff are intent on taking care of you. A walk around the grounds will immediately reveal an array of interests from the owner, who is an extremely kind and interesting man himself. Mark and the staff know the area well, and were priceless in their knowledge and advice regarding where to go and what to do to conclude our serendipitous honeymoon. Thank you all for the stay, we hope to return. Highly recommend!

Historic, beautifully updated. Wine, sodas, nibbles and homemade sweets complimentary all day. Wonderful breakfast and the owner Carl is a delight. Would have rated higher if possible!

My husband and I celebrated our honeymoon in New Zealand. We had to postpone for an emergency, and ended up in New Zealand in September, right when the ski season was winding down and right before Spring/Summer season was picking up. We got very lucky with the timing - we were not generally impeded by weather, and we didn't have bookings issues with crowds. Our stay in Te Anau was for a couple of nights, to allow us to do some hiking and also visit Milford Sound. We were warmly welcomed upon arrival, and Karl was fantastic and open with information and options for our Milford Sound visit. He showed us many options, to bus between Te Anau and Milford Sound, and we were incredibly happy with the one we chose that he then helped us book. Karl also had great recommendations for dinner, and helped us book both of our evening meals. Both restaurants were fantastic and had just opened for the season (great timing), and they were within walking distance from the lodge. The space was absolutely beautiful and well taken care of (and has a great story) - the grounds were fantastic, the rooms were great, and the view was just phenomenal. The breakfast was good, with great options, and we felt very well taken care of. Complimentary drinks and snacks in the lounge were delightful! We highly recommend Te Anau Lodge.

A truly exceptional place to stay. When we first arrived in Te Anau, we were a bit underwhelmed and concerned that two nights would be too long of a stay. The town is very small, it does not seem like there is a lot of things to do, and while it is beautiful. so it's the rest of New Zealand. But we were wrong.

The Te Anau lodge is a fantastic place to stay. The historic lodge feels like something from another time, but the inside is still comfortable, clean, and includes all of the amenities. The Cathedral room has an unbeatable view, probably the best hotel view we enjoyed throughout our trip. The breakfast service was good, but the lodge keepers were most helpful at helping us plan our time. He recommended excellent restaurants and booked our Milford sound tour. Thanks to the advice we received, we had an excellent time.

We wound up really enjoying our two nights in Te Anau. I highly recommend the lodge. I can also recommend staying in Te Anau to get a bus ride to Milford Sound, rather than making the trip from Queenstown.
