Tasty Chips and pizza.. Friendly staff and delicious food at Southern Hemisphere..
Ordered drinks and bar food (fish and chips, chowder, nachos) after a wet day of bird watching. The bar was lively with fellow tourists and locals alike. Great service from the bartender. Free WiFi.
Very unprofessional customer service experience. As someone who has worked in hospitality for 6 years, some of the staff were not very polite. Our table ordered soups as starters. I ordered a seafood chowder and one of the waitstaff brought me a soup of the day. I politely said that I actually ordered the chowder, and she pulled out the receipt to show me that a soup of the day was ordered. It was clear that the waiter who took my order at the bar must have typed it in wrong, which I understand happens, but as a staff member, why would you argue with the customer and demand they ordered something they didn't actually want? I've always learned that the customer is always right, and I found this very rude and unprofessional of the waitress. Next, my friend who wanted her crayfish as as starter, only got it much later than her main meal. She politely informed the waitstaff that it would have been nice if they brought it out in the correct order as she did specify and ask for this when she ordered. Again, the waitress was rude and defensive, not apologising for the inconvenience caused. Then, my other friends lamb came out completely undercooked (pretty much raw) and I believe the manager or owner, came up and said well that's how it's cooked, it's medium rare (It was blue) They took it back and cooked it for 10 more minutes and it was much better when it was brought back out. We are a happy group of young gals, who aren't here to be picky. We just believe good customer service goes a long way when someone is spending $40 plus on meals and drinks. It doesn't take much to be professional and make sure the customer is satisfied if a mistake is made. Poor management I believe. Although, one bar man at the end took it upon himself to try and rectify the situation by bringing the table a cocktail jug on the house which was nice.
Very disappointing. After a meal there and joining in the Pub Whizz our group of 21 senior women were not permitted to buy any wine or other beverage. We showed no signs of dtunkenes were not loud after the marking of the quizz but we're told we had consumed 9 bottles of wine then they increased the number to 21! Quite incorrect. Thank goodness for the 4 Square Store. They benefited as we bought all beverage including wine over our 6 day stay. Q
This is the main place for eating out. Price starts at $28 for main (they have seafood chowder in bar area (not too bad for $14) this is fish and chips, it is good. Crayfish is like $50 a tail which we had split between the two of us with fish and chips - it was good. The beer is cheap tho, $6 for a pint Tui on tap. Check for specials. Pays to book a table in dining room as generally quite full.
Great location. Good bar too. Would recommend it.
Good pub grub. A locals and tourist cornerstone of Stewart Island life.
We only ate breakfast here. Like everything on Stewart Island, it's over-priced, but given everything's price is just higher on the island, you can't judge it too harshly on this score. It's a cosy place and good spot to meet other travellers on the island. Nothing really stands out about it, but they've got a few whiskey's behind the bar and a reasonable range of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner including a couple of basic vegetarian options.
Had a meal here tonight, the staff on were just lovely, sweet under pressure with a smile on there dial. A great atmosphere. Thanks
A nice place to stay on Stewart Island, due to the excellent location. Food was good. The standard room in the hotel itself I stayed in was a bit old and basic, but the Cottage room I switched too was very nice!
We had a pretty good experience here. The location is incredible, being right on the water across from the ferry, and walking distance to most interesting attractions.
However, we had a terrible sleeping experience as our room was right above the bar, which is really noisy until about midnight, even mid-week. Really tough to get a good sleep and wake up early for the kiwi tours when music is blasting downstairs. Stay here, but avoid rooms 15 and 17 at the end of the hall.
Also, the food is excellent at the attached restaurant, but expect to basically serve yourself.
Did not stay at hotel but frequented the restaurant, and can report that breakfast, lunch and dinner all exceeded expectations. Very reasonable prices, a high standard of food and excellent service. Highly recommended.
