Beautiful area with great tramps and huts, but it's a bit rough and weather conditions change dramatically, so make sure you have an adequate level of backcountry experience.

The park was located some 20k's off the main road. You drive through private farmland to get there, including a number of gates. Once there, the trail heads straight up. You want to be in good shape because the climb is relentless. Once at the top you'll enjoy some nice views of the surrounding hills. Not sure I'd make the 2-hour drive from Hawkes Bay again though.

An early morning starlit trek up the ridge. Muesli bars for the sun rising. Gob smacking view at Armstrong Saddle.
