Very nicely prepared main meal of john dory and excellent friendly staff. Can see why it is highly rated on TripAdvisor. But book well ahead... Tuesday night and it was packed the whole time we were there.

We had been recommended this restaurant by a friend and as were a girls group down for a few days for the World of Wearable Arts we decided to give it a try. We were not disappointed.
This is a smaller bistro style restaurant. It has a small but well thought out menu beautifully cooked. It is primarily known for its fish dishes but there were also other gems to eat -the pate was particularly good if the expressions of delight on our faces were anything to go by. Everything we had was fabulous and amongst the 4 of us not a single complaint was to be had. Plus girls - do try their Ladies of Leisure cocktail ..oh yeah..
We were so impressed we rebooked immediately to come back two days later - each of us trying something different second time around and once again left well pleased.
I would like to also compliment the staff -in particular Kim the manager and Tamsin our waitress -who went above and beyond. But all the staff were friendly and efficient and when we returned for a second time two days later treated us like we were frequent visitors- even down to remembering our names and what out beverage preferences were - that blew us away. And if I lived in Wellington I would definitely be a regular!

Very friendly staff that made us feel welcome. Easy to get to. The food was very good. It is called the Ortega fish shack and is ranked very high in the Wellington seafood google search, however, bringing my chef partner from Australia to experience NZ seafood for the first time to such a limited option menu was very disappointing. No salmon, not even some type of sea food basket done with fresh fare. A bit of grilled blue cod, Moki or green bone with some lovely fresh salad would have been perfect.
We were told the menu was seasonal but I know for a fact I could buy NZ salmon and mussels from the supermarket across the road. I could order some venison or a steak but I went there for seafood.
I must say although the food and ambiance was very good I was somewhat embarrassed by what the top seafood restaurant in our capital city offered.

Due to some poor decision making on my own behalf - I ended up with the dullest meal on a phenomenal menu and it was STILL GOOD! The wine was delicious, everyone else had food that both looked and tasted wonderful and my dessert by far made up for my slightly dull kai. Though the steak itself was very good - my food envy for everyone else's fish dishes means I will definitely not be ordering it again. By far the best thing about Ortega however is the happy and gracious staff. You can always tell when a place is good to work for by the attitude of the staff and Ortega seems to tick all boxes.

Fantastic. It was busy, no booking, they offered us a seat at the bar. Great service. Delicious food and drinks.

Great warm and prompt service. Great ambience - nice paintings with a fishing theme; a sense of being cozy within a bustling crowd. Good bar. Had the beef fillet (very tender and lean) with thin fries; the seafood broth (fresh and full of flavour); the crayfish in scrambled eggs (great creamy mix of flavors). Reasonable prices.

A fabulous experience. We have been trying to get here for a year and a half and am so pleased we finally pulled it off. Totally lives up to its reputation. Thanks guys.

Possibly my favourite restaurant in Wellington, excellent food (though obviously fish-focussed) and great customer service, perfect for a romantic meal or supper with friends. It is more expensive than some places to eat, but you absolutely get what you pay for.

My carnivorous guests enjoyed the extensive fish and steak offerings. They rated highly the menu, service and meals. Less suitable for vegetarians. Quality meals. Tight seating. Expensive.

Really amazing food and they catered for the dietary requirements of our whole group, even one vegan. Great service and genuinely friendly staff too.

At the recommendation of the good folks at Hawthorne, we walked in without a reservation hoping to get a table. Fortunately it was late and in the middle of the week so we were able to get a table. They were very welcoming and immediately got a table ready for us. So nice.
I can't say enough good things about Ortega. The food was delicious, my fish was perfectly cooked and the sides were great. The wine list is very well done, the staff and service was exceptional. So so glad we we were able to eat here!

The sauces and remainder of the dishes were beautiful but the fish in each dish was over cooked as in dry and rubbery, which for the price isn't great. The mango coconut desert was memorable. Friendly staff nice wine. Just hard to get past the star of the dishes not being up to scratch.
