Good hostel for the price you pay. Great location but they had a few issues with the fire alarm which meant having to evacuate the building a few times. Kitchen facilities were were quite good although it gets very busy. Generally, pretty good hostel

When I first got to Wellington as a traveling backpacker, I was broke and needed to make money. I chose the cheapest hostel with free wifi that was centrally located.

Enter, Wild Zebra Backpackers.

I was able to land a work-for-stay thing that lasted several months. Over that time I got to know how good and bad the place was. 1. If you travel at hostels and expect high quality, go to Japan. 2. Hostels are usually cleaned and maintained by travelers. If you expect a place this old and size to be clean or well organized, welcome to reality.

That said, the 50+ yr old manager is basically a creepy grump to the point of cult status. Making it an enjoyable, even team building, exercise to gossip about when he wasn't lurking around. The place was large but didn't feel like a big company. It's basically ran by two people and slew of travelers.

I see a lot of reviews from people who stayed there one night, went "Yuck" and left a snotty review. Try living there 4 months and get back to me. The riff raft that stumbles into this place on the weekend is legendary. So many stories it could be made into a citcom. The other workers and I often joked about making one. So many travelers coming through Wellington either going to or coming from South Island. Living here for 4 months made it easy to sit back and watch the show.

All in all, the sheets are clean, I never saw a roach (other than pot) and the experiences outweighed any yucky moment, broken dryer or cold (rather too hot) shower experience.

Worse than Joseph Fritzl's basement. Not to make light of the Fritzl situation, but I need to emphasise how bad this hostel is.

We payed over $80 to stay in a double room found in the shower block. It stank of feet, the wifi didn't reach our dungeon/ room and we had to pay extra to get a towel for an ensuite room. The towel was stained and featured a few stray pubes.

Honestly, even if it's your last resort, just stay on the street. It'll probably be cleaner.

The worst hostel by far entire my life. Nothing what's stated on its website is true.
The whole premises reeks of feet. The room was appalling, body hairs on bedding and bathroom. Live spiders in the room. no Wifi connection. Somewhat resembles prison.
Thin walls (both inner walls and outer walls), no central heating nor a heater in the room. Felt like a semi-homeless.

Ended up checking out after 1 night (booked for 2 nights). And 'no refund policy'. Couldn't get any money refunded.

I think this place is great for people who are eager to experience nights in prison or refugee camp at your own expense.

Horrific experience. Our room was disgusting and the kitchen/lounge area looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a year. We were woken up at 4am by a crowd of unruly drunk students, and they didn't go to sleep until 7am, when we were ready to leave. The WiFi was stationed on the ground floor, so there was no reception on our floor. The staff were nice enough to let my 11 year old daughter use the WiFi by sitting in the grotty reception (?) room quietly until bedtime.

Rooms on level 5 are good. Other floors are just OK.
Hostel has lot of people that have been for long term, and they usually behave as if the place belongs to them.
WiFi is free, but limited to one device.
Telephone bookings doesn't guarantee an actual booking as staff (mostly) forgets to make booking entries in the computer. I would recommend to ask for email confirmation.

The blonde haired English girl was rude abused me whilst the manager stood there and felt her up. No free towels soap or shampoo wasn't provided free condoms so now I have a yeast infection down there from the old cleaner. Acid was good from the free shelf

We booked a room with a double bed. First the receptionist girl gave us the wrong room. We went to te reception again and then she gave us another room. We went in- just one bed. We went down again and tried to handle it- without success. So it was definitely the worst hostel experience we've had. in the end we had to sleep together in a single bed, because all other rooms where booked out. Incompetent and unprofessional- she did not take us seriously. We were very disappointed from the behaviour of the staff at wild zebra. Finally the room was also very cold although the window was closed and there was any wifi. can't recommend it!

Let me tell you a story. It all began in the Urban Jungle, there it was the Wild Zebra; its camouflage piercing to the eye, and its wild odor stinging to the nostrils. We entered in the rectum of the wild beast. It's minions working at the front desk gave us our wifi codes, and we ascended up the stairs to the central heart of the animal. We emerged into the corridor where the smell of moldy food, and unchanged rubbish bins burned the inner hairs of our nasal cavities. After quickly escaping a near gas attack we entered our room, where we saw the unthinkable. The minions were "changing" the linens off the beds, without replacing the sheets or pillow cases. As we lay in our beds I could feel the dead skin cells of the obese man who slept in the bed the night before me slithering onto my face. As the night wore on, the Wild Zebra began to itch, almost as if there were small insects nestled in the beds of our room. I'll give you a hint.. There names rhyme with ted rugs! ;) As the sun rose over the horizon of the Wellington Jungle.
The inner's of the Zebra once again began to stir as the kitchen filled up with guests. Boiling water spilled as none of the pots had handles, threatening the safety of the endangered ecosystem. Night fell upon us quicker than ever imagined, we decide this night would be the night we explore more of the unknown. We descend onto the second floor of the Zebra, where the nocturnal females had begun to pour themselves upon the ever so growing homeless population. No jungle machete could cut through the thick scent of cheap perfume.
Our stay in the Wild Zebra slowly came to a close with a final night remaining. With our return to our room an eviction notice appeared on the door for us to leave. This was alarming and we cut our way down through the jungle into the bowel where the minions nestled in their burrows. They had overbooked our room, and demanded with there pack of savages that we vacate. Suddenly a figure emerged, an older man of about 25. The leader of the jungle people, the all knowing, the wise man, the prestigious, the chief off all. The general manager! The Big Chief, Spirit bear, waved his arms and the issue of the over booking disappeared into a big cloud of vaporous smoke!
That concludes our trilogy of the Wild Zebra, if you dare to enter, beware the warnings that I have cast upon you, and make sure you always have your wits about you. For if you relax too much, the Wild Zebra may just digest you.

Might be one of the cheapests in town and the location is great. But you get what you paid for. Smelly rooms, staff mostly not helpful/nice, poor showers (there's one shower specifically that looks more like a tap water from the wall), not clean atmosphere. Plus, lot of people allowed to get in and out which is not a problem but it could be if there is someone with bad intentions. So you don't get a good feeling that it's a safe hostel.

No lockers in the rooms.

Storage room is on the first floor but the door is always unlocked.

If I would stay again? Only if the budget is limited and the other hostels in town are fully booked, which happens quite often.

A great hostel, fantastic location right next to the heart of Wellington's night life, nice people good vibes, big kitchen and a ping pong table for those rainy days.
