I did this with a group tour. The staff was nice. However, it was basically only driving, saw about three places that actually showed places of The Lord of the Rings shooting, 2 of which we were told we cannot stop or get out here to look and see the places and get pictures. The other places we stopped weren’t related to the movie. It was nice scenic places but I took the trip to see the filming places of the LotR not just scenes of other places with oh here let me point to where a scene took places while we drive past it I’m quite disappointed in it. To me it fails to deliver.
We did two tours with Nomad Safaris and both were amazing: The Safari of The Scenes – Wakatipu Basin tour as well as the Skippers Canyon tour. Both are fun and really interesting, even if you're not a LOTR fan. The tour guides on both tours were friendly and knowledgable, riding in a 4WD jeep is lots of fun and the views were out of this world. (And the banana bread is to die for. :))
If you are into LOTR, visiting the scenes you know from the movies is a great experience - it feels a bit like entering middle-earth. And the guides told us many interesting tidbits and anecdotes we didn't know about before - even though I consider us to be quite big fans!
But as already mentioned, even without the LOTR stuff, there is so much to see and learn! One of my favourite parts with the Wakatipu Basin tour was the river crossing - a ride to rival any rollercoaster. And if you're looking for a thrill while simultaniously learning lots about the gold rush in the Queenstown area, definitely do the Skipper's Canyon tour. The ride on this wild and remote road is a unique experience.
I traveled to Queenstown in January 2017 and my hotel had suggested I try the Nomad Safaris tour. I was 5 months pregnant at the time, and my hotel assured me that I'd be fine on this tour and that it was quite relaxing. Once on the tour I realized it was too bumpy and fast for me, but I did not want to ruin it for others so I did not complain. Once the driver told us that we were heading back towards town because of the weather, I then asked if on the way he'd drop me off because I just didn't feel well. He agreed, and the tour continued after my drop off.
I complain only because when I contacted Nomad Safaris to ask if a refund was possible because this tour was challenging for me while being pregnant and all, I received an email response from someone named David that actually left me in tears. Had he told me that I should contact my hotel because they are the ones who falsely advertised this excursion I would've respected their policy and worked directly with the hotel. But his email was so nasty I could never imagine responding to a customer the way he did.
His final lines of the email (as shown below) were completely unnecessary and terribly hurtful. Thank you for the terrible customer service David, and Nomad Safaris. Feel free to keep the $370 you took from us as you clearly need it more than we do. Had I known this company was so rude I would have never even considered your excursion.
"Your threats of reprisal are not welcome and quite unnecessary given that your complaint carries zero credibility. Should you wish to continue with your argument I suggest you take it up with the New Zealand Minister in charge of our roads, as surely your angst is about the state of the New Zealand legal roads and not with this, very esteemed, tour operator.
Let me know when you have something of a point that actually concerns Nomad Safaris. Currently nothing within your argument has any relevance to this company's activities and it is with great pleasure I can decline your request for a refund based upon your submitted arguments." ~ David, Nomad Safaris
Awesome experience and best tour guide i have experience so far in my travels. So knowledgeable, fun and professional. Thanks heaps Michelle!
This was one of our favorite tours in New Zealand! The scenic views were unbeatable! We did the Glenorchy Lord of the Rings Tour and it was the perfect length with an amazing, knowledgeable, friendly and humorous guide! Well worth the time/money!
They were on time with picking my partner and I up from our hotel. The workers were definitely friendly and knowledgeable. The briefing was not long at all which was good nice & straight to the point. Our guide was insightful & took us to all the beautiful view points. The treats at the top was exactly what you need to take in the nice views. Would definitely recommend this company.
