Early this year I went to Modes to look for a dressI tried on a dress that I really liked and immediately fell in love with it. Unfortunately it was too big for me and considering it was ~ $600 I didnt want to buy it if it didnt fit me well. I was told dont worry we alter everything to fit our clients perfectly. At this point my mum and I asked her when do you alter it and what is the charge. She told us it is complementary and that I should come back closer to the time of my event to get it fit.
Later, I went back to Modes to get my fitting done. I walked out and this old kiwi lady who was the manager came out to pin my dress for me. She was very rude and barely even spoke to me. She didn't ask me how I wanted it or anything and when I excitedly tried to tell her small details she ignored me and grunted. She pinned the dress according to her own liking.
When I got my dress finally and went to walk out the manager lady said to me hold on thats $120. I got upset, at no point was I informed of the cost for it. I even took out the card where confirmation for my alteration was written and showed her that nowhere did it say that this would come at an additional cost. She snatched it off me and told me that didnt mean anything, When I asked for the card back she said it was a modes business card so it was her property. I said this was given to me in April and has been sitting in my wallet ever since - it is my property. She said what are you going to do about it!!
I was completely mislead into getting my dress altered with them. I could have gone elsewhere - to my own tailor who does everything for me - yes, it would have costed about the same but at least I would be fully informed about the cost of the service and trust that it would be done properly. Here, I was given no invoice, no mention of a price nothing. Instead was lied to and told that the fitting would be complementary. I said to the manager, when I came in to get my dress pinned at no point did you even mention the price for altering it. If you had I wouldn't have gone through with it. If you had shown me an invoice or anything I would have said no thanks - I have my own people who live closer to me that could have altered it for me easily. The manager was so rude she grabbed the dress and put it out back and said I cannot take it then. She told me to get out of the store and that I could not have my dress. I told her this is my dress and that I had paid for it months ago. She said no you did not pay for the alteration you cant have it. I have never ever been in a situation like this before. I was shaking. I was all alone, the store was about to shut so all the doors were closed and it was me, the manager and her two employees (who looked terrified themselves).
She called me spoilt, she called me cheap, she told me to "go back to wherever in the world I'm from and not come back", she told me I need a good shapening up by my mum, she told me get out and that I was pathetic. She even threatened to call security! I just spent over $600 on a dress at this store and then paid another $120 for alterations and she was absolutely disgusting.
I called consumer guarantees and laid a formal complaint with the commerce commission. I am in the process of taking them to the disputes tribunal.
The cost of the alterations is not why I was upset. I just paid $600 for the dress I can afford an extra $120. It was the disgusting managers behaviour and the shady way they misled me into getting the alteration that upset me and made me feel like I needed to speak out.
The dress WASN'T EVEN TAILORED PROPERLY it was still sooo loose around my bust and I had to go to my own tailor to fix it up anyways- such a pain!
******Her "alarmed staff" were terrified of their own managers behaviour not mine. They looked at me apologetically and could not believe what she was doing and how bizarre she was acting. I felt sorry for them and can tell they get pressured a lot by the establishment :( My "aggressive" behaviour was me trying to stand my ground in front of this bully.
Everyone at Modes are absolutely awesome. Great after sales service
I'm just writing to say thank you so much for the best shopping experience I have ever had. I came in looking for a dress to wear to a wedding and was treated like royalty from start to finish. You set the bar very high with service I can see why you have won best retailer. Thanks again for really making me feel amazing.
Brought my sister to Modes for a evening gown, tailored in 1 week with a very reasonable alteration price -only the hem needed to be done. Amazing service ladies ❤️
Modes Bridal were wonderful. I felt comfortable deciding on my favorite style dress without any pressure or forced recommendations. They were easy to communicate with, ordered the dress for me with plenty of time to spare, and tailored it to fit to perfection for a very reasonable cost. The dress was absolutely perfect! They also had heaps of beautiful accessories in store which I was able to try on without any pressure to buy. Buying my dream dress from Modes Bridal was so easy, I wish I could do it again!
Had a great experience - the team were so helpful and they have a great selection!
Excellent service!
Worst shop to shop at bought a dress for my daughter for her ball and it needed to be altered because it was a bit loose I asked them before i bought dress how much it will cost to alter and they said about $60..went to pick up the dress and they said alteration costs $160 worst experience ever..😡
Unfortunately my experience was not pleasant. I was looking for a mother of the groom dress and unfortunately ended up buying something that was not suitable and actually looked awful on me once I looked at the photo. I changed my mind so I agree it was my fault however I am normally a confident shopper but made a mistake this time. I asked if I could possibly have a refund as I live in Australia and the dress was still in their shop in Auckland. I was told by Diane( Owner) that she could not on sell it as new as it had already been purchased so I would just have to put up with it. I won't go into too much detail but in the end she agreed to an exchange. Eventually this did happen but she reduced my credit note . This is her unprofessional response to my email.
"Dear Leanne,
We had no obligation at all to exchange your garment it was a personally selected item by yourself that you simply changed your mind about the colour.
I pointed out to you on the phone that if we were to assist you with this there would be a fee and if we had agreed to a refund there would have been a larger fee. The $50 fee is minimal considering all the emails, phone calls and time you spent selecting another item.
It is incredible that you should even question it. Instead of bothering even more people with your "story" you should be most grateful and gracious about the assistance you have received from us. In contrast another person may have bought us some chocolates or flowers as a gesture of appreciation. This would be normal and acceptable behaviour under the circumstances.
Diane"
Just to clarify I didn't pick the dress I settled for it, they did from out the back, I didn't agree to a reduction nor did I book for a fitting. The rest of her staff were lovely(Jacqui and Lauren) but I found Diane to be a bully very intimidating and rude. Flowers and chocolates yes to the ambulance drivers who saved my life but not for a dress shop that sells me a dress.
Leanne.
