This is a must-see if you're in New Zealand. Even if you're not into Lord Of The Rings, the location is gorgeous and feels surreal. We did the daytime tour last time around and the evening banquet tour this time.
Our tour of Hobbiton was detailed and thorough with an enthusiastic guide, followed by an amazing Hobbit-style dinner in the Green Dragon Inn during a thunderstorm. The food was incredible, the drinks delicious, and we finished up feeling very full.
The tour then took us back outside to tour Hobbiton under lamp-light in the dark while it was still raining. We loved every minute and will definitely return!response / report this review -

A must see for all the fans of those films! Guided tour was really good and well organised. The group size wasn't too big so it's easy to move and take pictures. Also the Hobbiton garden is superbly maintained and everything looks like in film. At the end of tour you get a mug of ale or cider at the Green Dragon Inn. You won't be disappointed.

It's been years since I last saw the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit series. However, I do remember loving them! So when my wife decided that she wanted to take a trip to New Zealand, the first thing I planned was a stop at the Movie Set. I even booked our tour tickets after our flights and planned our journey through the North Island around when we would be visiting this site.
The day we arrived, it was wet and rainy. That just added to our "journey". Overall, it was super cool to see all of the hobbit holes. I felt like a child at the toy store.
The best part about it all, is they have it running like a well oiled machine. They have tours constantly throughout the day and they are on schedule. So unlike *COUGH* the glow caves, people who have traveled across the world can visit.response / report this review -

This place is magical. If you've watched any of the Hobbit or Lord of the rings movies, this is a must see .. if you haven't watch at least one or two before you go to new Zealand.
The tour guides were friendly, knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. The tour is on time and support organized .. cafe is great for grabbing a bite.response / report this review -

Great guided tour. Our guide was so friendly and funny! The paths and facilities are in perfect conditions. There’s one free beer at the end of the tour and a bar to buy some more or food too. There’s a restaurant and a gift shop at the entrance. A lot of spaces to park your car. Totally recommend if you saw Lord of the Rings.

As a non-fan of Lord of the Rings, I went here more as a lover of movies in general - and was really impressed with the whole experience. The tour is organised to perfection, taking each group around at a casual but steady pace, so that there are plenty of photo opportunities and time to soak up the atmosphere of a fantasy land movie set. Everything finishes up with a complimentary drink in The Green Dragon pub. If you love the movies, you'll be in heaven.

Wonderful experience and knowledgeable tour guide. Gift store rather pricey. A lot of pushy overseas tourists who think they are to go first and push others out of the way. Do not pass up the opportunity to visit Good Eats in Matamata itself. Superb food!

Amazing, truly fantastic! A must-see whether you are a die-hard LotR/Hobbit fan or never even seen a movie or read a book. Take some time and take a tour here; it's worth every second. The tours are well done with very friendly guides. Even if it is cloudy, the landscape is still breathtaking and the Hobbit holes are well-maintained. The tour guide is aware of the massive photo opportunities and, thus, enough time is planned.
The gift shop is a tad overpriced, but nothing else is to be expected.response / report this review -

Scenery was beautiful. Tour guides were very friendly and knowledgeable. The complimentary drink from The Green Dragon was a great way to end the tour. The only downside was that I couldn't stay longer. If you've seen The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and liked them, you will definitely enjoy yourself here. If you haven't seen them, this tour will make you want to watch them. If you have the chance, I would 100% recommend that you go. If you don't have the time, I would 100% recommend that you cancel something and make time to go.

A great experience for Hobbit fans of all ages. Despite the fact that it was raining when we went, our tour guide was friendly and gave us plenty of information about the set (for example, when visiting the set, you will see that some Hobbit holes are quite big and some quite small. This is to create the illusion of either a regular-sized human coming to a Hobbit-sized door, or a Hobbit-sized human coming to a regular-sized door, without having to find particularly small humans!). After the tour, we were given the chance to have a drink at the Green Dragon Inn, the same Inn used in the movie (but now renovated to actually allow for drinks to be made there!), where you are offered beer, and hot drinks such as tea. Overall, I'd say this is a brilliant place to go if you happen to find yourself in the area, regardless of age (or how big of a fan you are!).

It looks just like it does in the films. If you are a fan or not this is worth the visit. Is busy but if you walk at the back of ypur tour group it is much more relaxing. Free drink included. Staff are informative and will take pictures if you wish them too. Yes it is expensive but i had a great time and would love to go again.

How much of a LOTR or Hobbit fan are you?
This place is the literal mecca of any fans of the movie or book series and it is amazing. The tour guide (Sunny) was knowledgeable beyond belief and was friendly and welcoming at all times.
Bit of a cold day when raining, as you can see from the photos above, but worth it. We were provided umbrellas on site which were sufficient to keep us dry.
A lovely alcoholic or non-alcoholic drink awaits you at the Green Dragon Inn - there is a night feast which will be worth going to in future!response / report this review -

A memorable experience and well worth the ticket price. Our tour guide and bus drivers were excellent and everyone made us feel welcome. The journey through the Shire and the finale at the Green Dragon was incredible and you have to see it for yourself.

Worth every penny! Book the evening banquet tour and you get fun and informative staff, a quiet look at the Shire in all its beautiful detail and a meal fit for hobbits. The food and drink were both delicious and made even better sat within the Green Dragon. Lots of extra details made this tour memorable 10/10.

I was skeptical about Hobbiton before, but extremely impressed after going. My wife and I attended the dinner + tour package for our honeymoon last day in New Zealand. It was organized very well and the tour of the Hobbit holes was really fun even with a drizzle outside. The meal was in the beautiful Green Dragon inn and it was wonderful and so filling I could burst at the seams. Save room for dessert! A free beer/cider was included and I enjoyed the stout quite well. So many great photographs and even a night walk through the Shire after dinner. Highly recommended!
