A little bit removed from central Oamaru, this backpackers has a fun and funky atmosphere and is a great spot to stay. The prices were one of the best in the area.

This should really be a six star review. I think the name of the place says it all. At checkin there are paintings all around, and supplies for guests to paint. All the paint, brushes, canvas (or white painted boards) are provided. If the painting turns out, it may be put up in the hostel somewhere! If not such a masterpiece, it is painted white later, and re-used by a future guest. Cool idea, and lots of great paintings up everywhere from previous guests. I have never painted before, but took this opportunity to paint my first masterpiece (which looked a bit like a small child got ahold of some paint brushes for the first time, but it was fun!) This backpacker hostel has a great feel everywhere, and is clean. Our room was spacious and bright from the big windows. There are musical instruments in the lounge to play, and even a huge Jenga game (stands about 1 meter tall before beginning the game). This is by far my favorite backpacker stay ever! (We were initially planning to streamline our trip from Dunedin back to Christchurch, but stayed here another night because we liked it so much)

I stayed there for a week as a worker. The place is really cool and all the pictures and the instruments are really cool. You can't say anything about the staff because they always change. A bit far from the centre though

Their website describes the place as 'social clean accommodation offering a friendly environment'. ALL LIES! The staff were rude and my room had a thick layer dust on the window sills with sprinkling of dead flies to top of it. If that was the extent cleanliness problems I couldn't tell, the dated decor may just be dated or it may not have been cleaned since it was in the 40s, it's impossible to tell.
Also the drapes were broken so I was awoken at 6am with sunrise, not what you need when you have a long day ahead.
Finally the security is laughable! With pin code lock doors with codes little better than 12345 you as well not bother with locks. All you you need one person to post the codes online for the entire world to know how to brake in. It may have only cost $50 for the night but some simple security like a key lock for single rooms is not too much to ask for. I certainly didn't like leaving all my camera gear in room.
I certainly would NEVER stay there again, even if the prices were slashed to under $5!
I also posted this review on their website two weeks ago, it never appeared on the site so I'm guessing the admin is filtering the reviews. Not good at all.
