I am a frequent customer of Apex. Usually happy with all my car rentals with them but my recent experience was terrible because of one personnel.

I was returning my car to the Christchurch Airport branch at 6.30pm on Sunday the 3/12 when the return bays were completely full. Unsure where to park the car, I left it running as I got out and started packing up my stuff.

The man who drove the van (the only male staff on duty) came to me and started telling me off for stopping my car there. I told him I was genuinely unsure where to park, as the signs clearly say car returns and there were no directions on where to proceed, either on site or on the agreement. He then started to patronisingly telling me I need to follow the local rules re: parking bay. Well I am a NZ permanent resident of 10 years and I know my road rules very well, thank you very much. The fault lies on your company for not giving clear instructions on where to park the car.

Fix up you employees’ attitude please, Apex, or you’ll lose a loyal customer of many years.

I do NOT recommend you hire a car from this company.

My brother and partner booked car with Apex using their website and that was the ONLY part of the experience that went well. I was with his partner when she went to collect that car from the Apex Christchurch office. Despite them having bought insurance (through an Apex partner), the Apex staff were insistent on them having to hand over $2000 in surety, on the justification that a Visa debit card was being used. After much debate, a manager was called in, who eventually agreed to waive the surety requirement. However, due to various reasons, it was decided that the hire would be finalised when my brother arrived into ChCh, early the following morning and this was communicated to Apex. Disappointingly, when my brother arrived to collect the car at 7am the next morning, the staff member on duty had no information about the arrangements from the night before and instead proceeded to hammer my brother with the same ridiculous requirement for a $2,000 upfront holding deposit! This time there was no reasonableness brought to bear and my brother ended up walking out, having to now find other means of transport.

All in all, it was a really ordinary bit of communication from Apex and a lousy example of customer service. Don't get sucked in by the low prices. There are plenty of other rental car operators with good prices AND good service.

Weird sign up. OLD jalopy of a car - over 200,000 km on the clock! you think this would get you a cheap deal. NO same price as a later model. RIP OFF prices for vehicle I drove. Did not feel safe, not to mention embarrassing to drive this old banger around with giant APEX RENTAL sticker emblazoned across the rear windshield.

Very good value for money, car was also in very good nick and catered to my request of getting a manual (most of their fleet are automatics). Friendly staff and all in all a good and slick experience. No issues at the other end when dropping the car off in Picton either.

BEWARE. CHECK YOUR VEHICLE. HSG307 Ford Focus White has a fault on front bumper. Appalling. We picked up the car from Apex Picton after completing the last day of the Queen Charlotte Trek in the rain followed by the water taxi ride. We were cold and soaked through, plus we had children. The staff were super friendly. Silly me signed the paperwork even though I didn't have my glasses and didn't check the car. I have never had an adverse experience with a car rental company but something made me do something I have never done before - take photos of the car - HSG307 Ford Focus White (in case they have done the dodgy on anyone else). My phone recorded all the details of when the photo was taken. Glad I did it even though we had a nil excess. We didn't pick up the problem with the front bumper - we were so cold and wet we just wanted to have hot showers. No problems with the car while renting it. We returned it to Christchurch airport approximately 20 hours early and my husband got it there just after their closing time - we had miscalculated how long it would take us to finish a walk in the mountains. He had filled it up with unleaded 95 petrol before taking it there. The person phoned the supervisor who said that the $30 late fee would be waived. They then picked up damage to the front bumper. My husband said he did not do it. They keep questioning him wanting him to say he did it. He had to fill out a damage report (I am not saying this is an unreasonable request). We are now back home and today I open up my email and find an email from Apex Picton saying they are charging us for the $30!!! I couldn't believe it after this fee had been specifically waived. I also thought they had some nerve as they deliberately gave us a vehicle with damage on the front bumper, gave us the paper work with a pen before giving us the keys knowing the damage would not be picked up. It wouldn't have been had I not taken the photos and it was only this morning when my husband and I looked at the photos and magnified them that we saw the damage. BEWARE. We love NZ - it is our fourth time there - the people are so friendly. This is the first time we have experienced such dishonest behaviour.

We received great service from Apex in the 22 days we rent a budget car. The first 11 days we had a Mazda Demio (aka Mazda 2) with 120K+ km. We changed cars in Christchurch and took charge of another Mazda Demio with 70K+ km.

On two occasions (once traveling South, the other North) Apex arranged for our ferry tickets and also covered the vehicle's portion of the ferry ticket.

We never had any problems with either vehicle.

Frustrated agents, old banger of a car and silly foreign licence translation fees I will steer clear of these guys. Went to Ace rentals by accident at first and they were so helpful and friendly go with them if you get the chance!

WORST experience ever! My family booked the car very early and we got a fairly cheap deal. The car company had already let us go with the car. After an hour of driving, they sent us a email to return to their company IMMEDIATELY. Don't know what to do (whether it was due to a faulty car), we returned and the staff told us that someone complained that we drove on the RIGHT. Excuse me, in Hong Kong, we always drive on LEFT like New Zealand do!!! They didn't let us go and insisted that we have to do a driving test with their staff, and then they tell us that we failed. They sent us back to the airport, then we had to DOUBLE our money to get a car from another company.
This is the most ridiculous experience we have ever had with car rental, wasting our precious time and money. Very angry!
