Great location and pretty cheap. There was no wifi in the bottom level where I had my room but that did not really matter as you can use the common room upstairs. The breakfast was amazing, big buffet eggs every way. Only a 10 min walk form the central station, good place to stay short notice in order to keep the costs down.

Its not really bad but if you have a little more money, find something more spacious. It’s good for backpackers who travel on a small budget.

Great staff and a very interesting experience. I don't fault them for the cramped accommodations, as it is a boat and that is to be expected. However, the toilets did not work properly and were literally full of waste for a full day. The shower is in the same small room as the toilet - think the size of a public bathroom stall. And the real kicker is that the boat actually moved after our first day there while we were out, with no advance warning save for an obscure note on a chalkboard. We ended up walking around for an hour whilst on the phone with the hotel trying to find the new location, which was about a 1.5 mile walk from the original pier. For the price, this is basically an overpriced hostel that moves.

The novelty factor is strong here, and the staff are nice and friendly, but let's make it very clear - the cabins are really tiny. You will be sleeping in a tiny bunk which is not very comfortable. There are over 25 cabins on board which sleep two people each but only two toilets for men and two for women. Same for showers, so in the morning it can be very frustrating. The price is also a little steep although you do get a nice breakfast included which goes some way to make up for it. If you want the novelty of sleeping on a houseboat then do it, but one night might be enough.

Honestly I think if Amsterdam had not been an amazing city, the experiencing of staying in this boat would have been more than depressing. But I will try to be unbiased but:
1) the room was tiny, but you get what you pay for. Something unpleasant also happened during our arrival and paying for the hotel, if that we asked to pay separately, but the lady/owner (who is nice and very helpful most of the time) said "Pay together, it's too much trouble. (which is interesting because we are PAYing for your service?) One of you pay the other later.". But that created so much hassle and stress for me and my friend who are both students, who had a budget to have come on the trip. A long story, but lets say because banks are complicated and also taking out cash cannot be over £100, lets just say it created unnecessary stress when we should be having a relaxing time.
2) if you aren't used to living on a boat (which is nothing like a cruise in terms of how much it sways in the water etc and layout ofc), you may experience sea sickness, a longing for sleeping without smelling the dampness (which isn't too bad but it gets worse when it rains), and honestly, just more natural light. On the last and fourth day my friend's towel started to grow mould
3) the bathrooms were better than we thought it'd be but again, small, and impossible to get clean clothes dry on the hook since the moisture dampens it, so only way to shower is to run from and back to your room wrapped in a towel.
4) Breakfast was lovely! Your typical and simple European food, I guess I can say.
5) The location was wonderful, but an hour's walk/30mins drive away from the main museums though - Van Gogh, etc. However, not as posh looking as the centre of Amsterdam, the boat near us are even worse by the looks of it, not the boats themselves but the kind go guests they attracted. One of us received racial slurs on the third day - again, ruined the morning a little bit. That has nothing to do with Vita Nova itself, but the area that comes with a hostel/hotel is important, too.
6) If you are also a poor student, stay there for the experience I think, but not too long, 2-3 nights maximum. Maybe move from hostel to hostel to experience Amsterdam :)
7) one star for the food and one star for the smiley, hard working staff.
I wouldn't stay again. At least not for more than 2 nights

Loved this hotel, the guy that owns it is very nice and helpful. It's a little away from the city center which ment it was nice and quiet to sleep at night. Rooms are tight but they are very comfortable. I would stay here again!

An fun and unusual place to stay in Amsterdam!

5 Stars for the service: "Roy" (not sure about the spelling) was very friendly and helpful, and when we asked him for advice he recommended some great places to see nearby.

He also kept the place very clean, and served a good breakfast, of bread, tea, coffee, spreads, meats cheeses, fruits and cereals. This was included with the price of the "cabin".

I say "CABIN", because this really is a boat, and quite a small one, and the cabins are VERY SMALL compared to a hotel room be warned! There is just enough room to stand up and get dressed, or lie down in bed. That was plenty of room for us, so no problems, but if you are expecting a large space to unpack and spread out, think again. I would still recommend this as a good place to go. just don't expect lots of space! There was a sink in our room for brushing teeth, and the toilet and shower were shared with the other people on the boat, which was not a problem, as they were kept very clean.

There is space to hang out in the communal lounge / dining room, which normally is a peaceful place with a couple of people of different nationalities hanging out there.

If you are a very light sleeper I would take some earplugs, because the other guests can sometimes bang the doors and keep you awake.

Overall, a great place to stay, and I would stay there again. :)
