Joe's Place is a wonderful surf hostel in a sleepy fishing village that provides a true rustic Nicaraguan experience. Situated a stone's throw from the estuary, the area provides world class fishing, and access to a heaving A-frame barrel "the boom", which is only for serious surfers. It's a solid wave when it's working, and will reward a committed drop-in with a deep, open, spitting barrel. There are some nice rampy sections for airs as well.

Joe takes his customers out fishing regularly on a well maintained ~18 foot boat, for free, yes, I said FREE. The only stipulation is that he keeps the fish; pretty good deal if you ask me! He will motor around the estuary trolling for pargo (snapper), jacks, barracuda, and roosterfish. He also swings offshore looking for Sierra mackerel and larger jacks and roosterfish. An occasional Dorado can be hooked, and maybe even sailfish if you are lucky. Surf fishing at the mouth of the estuary also let's anglers have a crack at some top notch snook (robalo) fishing. Roosterfish from the beach can also be had here. Bring some extra spoons, plastics and bucktail jigs! Oh, bring Joe some trolling lures too, if you feel so inclined. I left him with all my fishing gear when I departed; it was the least I could do for all the free boat trips he took me on!

As of March, 2018, Joe charges $7 a night to sleep in the dormitory, and I believe $20 for a private room. The property is well maintained, clean, rustic, and absolutely awesome. Joe himself speaks perfect English, Spanish, and Portuguese. He is a Potugese born old tuna fisherman from San Diego, California. He and his wife Aleyda retired in Asseradores 12 years ago and opened Joe's Place. They are constantly adding improvements to the hostel and ensuring that guests have a great experience. They are great with communication, so contact them via email or on Facebook and they will respond very quickly.

The food is wonderful at Joe's. It's cheap, made to order, and tasty. Surfers and locals come from the nearby area just to eat at Joe's, and sip on a Tona or Victoria. Joe's place is not a party hostel though. It's a surf/fishing hostel. On most nights, guests are in bed before midnight, and up at first light to get on The Boom before the wind does. There is a weekly (Thursday) night salsa party at Pasta La Vista in Aposentillo that the local surfers attend every week. Good dancing and drinking, lots of girls and guys partying into the night. Consequently, the crowds at The Boom on Friday mornings are very light, as most everyone is nursing a hangover :)

If you are into surfing, fishing, and want a truly Nicaraguan experience, without a glut of drunken tourists, Joe's is the best place I've found. Get on it!

Thank you Joe, Aleyda & crew for a wonderful stay, I will surely be back as soon as possible! Nos vemos!

Best hostel in the surroundings of aposentillo and aserradores for sure! Joes Place is more a family house than a hostel, where returning customers meet the new ones in a friendly and warm atmosphere. Joe is also a really nice person, when he goes fishing he always offers to join and make us discover the area. The BOUM is at walking distance and the hostel is one of the best located around. The food is excellent and the staff is just super nice and available for any thing. I will come back and I recommend!

Joe's Place was just what we needed for surf travel accommodation. Simple and cheap, with lovely hosts, good food and a good crowd. Make sure to book in advance as pretty popular and not many other affordable options around. Stayed a week got good waves every day
