Massive thank you to Celia, Maximiliano, and Daniel for MONTHS of friendly service. Car rentals here are extremely easy, with no hassle, no up-sell, nothing dodgy. You pay the price listed, the cars are in good condition, and they're very kind and efficient. Reserve ahead of time, and compare prices on avis.com vs avislac.com.
Great customer service experience for the most part. I rented a car for the day to drive to Playa Del Carmen. Unfortunately it was one day of our vacation that rained heavy ALL DAY but still a great experience. I was happy that the staff members wore a mask and took COVID serious. Max was the guy who assisted us. My only suggestion is do not pre-pay for insurance. Only get the basic insurance at the counter.
Although the price point might seem a bit higher than other rental agencies Avis actually has cars when you reserve them. Save yourself the hassle and just go to these guys. They are super friendly and helpful and most importantly, they can honor reservations you make with them! They saved me twice during my trip to Tulum when other agencies ended up not having cars which I had reserved.
I book one day rental through Expedia from Tulum with drop of service at Cancun International airport. The Expedia price for the one day service was 29.27 US$. The reservation clearly stated pick up and drop of locations without no indication on extra drop off charges. Long story short: I was charged, for the same trip, at AVIS office total of 129.19 US$ with basic insurance included. ( I decided to pay it, because it was not pleasant to leave AVIS office in order shop around during COVID-19 time). Obviously AVIS (and Expedia) this time took advantage on their policies.
We booked a car for 6 days. Later we moved to the beach and gave the car 3 days before back. They accept that we give the car earlier back without problems. Easy and good service via WhatsApp before booking.
The Car was OK and no problem so i dont complain about that. But the seller was so arrogant i and my friend couldn't belive this. First when we rent the car the seller was impatient, snootily and unfriendly. i dont know where to problem was.. actually i guess the reason could be that we were two young womens or we rented the cheapest but well for 2 days 140 USD quiet expensiv. And he give me no time to check the contract, he rushed me so heavy.
Then as we brought the car back an other seller were there we just arrived 5.50 pm in front of avis and we had to refuel the car.. ( i know we were pretty late and it's kind our misstake) the man told us yes you can go for refuel the car but when you in 10 min not back we are closed (they close at 6 pm). so the next gas station was 3 minutes by car away but we weren't sure if we can do this in 10minuets because of the trafic etc. so there was no flexibility for waiting 5min more. we decide to pay the gasoline in avis, they charged us the double for the gasoline-- the tank was halfful! but the worst was that the seller spoke about me and my friend to an other costumer in spanish. that he is annoyed and what we are beliving.. well it was a bad experience and i wouldn't recommend avis tulum.
We had an awesome experience at Avis. Maximilian made the whole experience easy and he was very helpful at check out. He went above and beyond and even flagged a taxi for us and negotiated a good price to get to Playa. Will definitely be renting from him again when we return.
This is an amazing rental location. Maximiliano was very knowledgeable and he made the whole process go very smoothly. I highly recommend renting a car from this Avis location. It was also the best price around.
Excellent! The staff was very friendly, prices were fair, everything went way too smooth. I was expecting a big bang at the return, but: nothing! All good!
The downside: Once you add an insurance it gets extremely expensive.
The most honest and flexible car rental in Tulum.
Great service, good prices, and no hassles. Highly recommending them. Thanks for a no-hassle time!
I rented from this particular location because I was planning to stay in town after a week on the beach and I could walk to my in town hotel easily on return. I got a mid size car for about 23USD a day although I opted for additional insurance.

Was a bit worried about hiring a car in Mexico. Dealt with Max in Tulum Avis and he was great! His english was perfect which also made it alot easier. As the Avis has a few rental agencies close by, Max was willing to negotiate the price. Ended up with a great deal and was able to drop the car off in Cancun the next day (highly recommend hiring the car on the afternoon and driving to Chichen Itza early the next morning, it works out cheaper than the bus with a couple of people and is much quicker and more convenient). Max explained all the hiring details really clearly. At the time I had my doubts about the holds on my credit card (as you always do with car rentals) but after a few days they were all cleared. Basically, it was a seamless experience that I was really skeptical about, but it all worked out so perfectly that i thought it was worthy of a review. Thanks Max!
Had a bad experience trying to rent a car from the airport in Cancun, ended up taking a taxi to Tulum and came to avis and it was awesome! Everything was explained clearly and we were able to drop off the car in cancun.
