We've really enjoyed our stay at Aye Chan Mya! We stayed 5 nights, and it was a reliable home base. We came here after one night at Pann Su Wai, which was closer to town but we found quite unsavory (tiny, dark room which smelled like dust and feet). Called here and booked for the next day, and were VERY happy to arrive and find a CLEAN room, with space and plenty of light. Great bathrooms--clean, with plentiful hot water and good water pressure.
Two things we'd read in other reviews put us off of booking here originally, and in the end neither seemed worth having worried about. One, it was mentioned that it was far from town. This isn't really true, since the area around Aye Chan Mya is just as city-like as many areas uptown. It's just a ways from the center of town, and the hill with the "sights"-- a row of beautiful temples. To me, walking the streets of Mawlamyine is more of a sight than the temples, really, so we were often content to walk into town in the morning and take a motorbike taxi (1,500Ks/2pax) back in the evening. Dining options are a bit limited in the area, but they are a bit limited EVERYWHERE in Mawlamyine, so that shouldn't sway you. There's a great teahouse just up the road called Ivy, where we got breakfast every morning, and a few other noodle shops around.
The other complaint I saw was that it didn't feel inviting, and I didn't find this true at all! I felt quite at home, and the upstairs corridor is quite lovely to sit out in. The front desk staff is not the friendliest I've encountered in Myanmar, but that is STIFF competition, and they are nice enough.
Add to this that rooms are the cheapest we saw in what seems to be a very expensive town for lodging. We almost didn't come on that basis, but I'm glad we did, and I'm glad we ended up here. They also seem to have shared bathroom rooms, which might be even cheaper. All around a great choice!
