I wanna share something that i enjoyed while coming to katragama by walking around 130Km in Forest.
We took 4 days to reach the temple by walking. There are no words to explain my experience in the 🌳 forest. While walking into the forest, we saw elephants 🐘, Ghost 👻 and many more animals. And one thing to share with you, we have to carry our things that needed for 4 days. Here I’m sharing my Pics during the season

Katharagama is a pilgrimage town sacred to Buddhist, Hindu and indigenous Vedda people of Sri Lanka. People from South India also go there to worship. The town has the Kataragama temple, a shrine dedicated to Skanda Kumara also known as Kataragama deviyo. Kataragama is located in the Monaragala District of Uva province, Sri Lanka. It is 228 km ESE of Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka. Although Kataragama was a small village in medieval times, today it is a fast-developing township surrounded by jungle in the southeastern region of Sri Lanka.

According to legendary history Ruhunu Kataragama Maha Devalaya was built by King Dutugemunu around 160 years B.C. in fulfillment of a vow to defeat King Elara in battle. It was endowed with large extent of land by King Dutugemunu for its maintenance and subsequent monarchs did likewise.

The 'building is a simple structure of two apartments and with no embellishments or show of grandeur. It has not undergone any major structural alterations, during this long period of over 2,000 years since its construction.

Rubeiro in his History of Ceylon says that 'four leagues inland from this spot (the salterns in Hambantota) is a Pagoda held in great reverence by the Grutiles; here are preserved the offerings which had been made for many ages, consisting of gold, jewels and precious stones, and 500 armed men are always maintained in its defence”.

This was in 1642 when Rubeiro was one of the 150 Portuguese and 2,000 Lascarins who made a vain attempt to locate this Pagoda and plunder its wealth, but “were forced to turn back the way we had come without effecting anything and without even seeing the Pagoda, which is called Catergao”.

Very interesting and colorful temple to visit. For me, one of the better ones in Sri Lanka. Both Buddhist and Hindu temples in close proximity with a lot going on, especially on a Sunday evening when we visited.

Ruhuṇu Kataragama Dewalaya is a temple complex dedicated to Buddhist guardian deity Kataragama deviyo. It is one of the few religious sites in Sri Lanka that is venerated by the Buddhists, Hindus and the Vedda people.
This place contains one of astapala bhodhiya (one of eight Bho tree created from most sacred Jaya Sri maha Bhodiya Anurada pura).

Were advised by Lonely Planet to visit this place during the evening pooja. Whilst the area gets lit up, its a very slow ceremony and not that exciting. It isn't worth the effort of a stopover as many temples have a pooja which is more exciting.

This is a famous Devala (temple) dedicated to the god Kataragama. It is usually a crowded place, even in the very early morning. We went there around 8 am and we were able to go inside and worship. There is a time table for opened time duration for a day. Better to be aware of that before visiting here. Lots of different food and ornaments are sold around the area. A large parking area is available from a side, along with the path to Kiri Vehera Stupa from this Devala.
