This place is too hipster for words. The walls are covered with murals center around opium and the only attraction seems to be the bar. If this is what you are looking for, go for it. But you get what you pay for. There is no air conditioning in the rooms and it is extremely hot. As for the outside sleeping arrangements with hammocks, it looks neat for Instagram photos, but is extremely uncomfortable and the sand on the ground makes changing and walking a nightmare. The bathrooms certainly had grungy vibe, at best. The pictures online definitely exaggerate the quality of the place. Tuliahouse Backpackers is also in a very dangerous part of Mombasa, you cannot go out after dark.

I have enjoyed pizza from this place. Found the service abit wanting though and the place could be neater. But I understand offer budget accommodation and it is conveniently located. One can easily access the mall, public transport, Haller park from Tulia house.

Perfect location for malls, bars and transport. Few mins walk to beach. Varied accommodation, lovely small pool and bar. Very noisy though with outsiders.

Great place to stay. Amazing food and drinks, great staff. It's also near some exciting places like waterworld so if you have time you can check it out. Will definitely stay here again

This is a wonderful place to stay when traveling on a budget. It's proximity to the beach and location in a good neighborhood are some of the winning factors. Their food is a bit pricey but there are malls and shops nearby.

Cramped dorms, inconsiderate and loud guests, no communal kitchen while the food is super expensive, outside food and drinks not allowed, grumpy white dude shouting at staff= not a backpacker friendly zone. Great pizza though!

Was there in August. Loved Mombasa and Tuliahouse! The staff at the hostel were great and let me drink my ass off, as I had a broken heart at the time. Walked the beaches, walked to town, and spent time at the pool. The beach can be dangerous at night with robberies, but two soldiers from the Kenyan Army escorted us down late, so I could walk with a companion. Good guys!!!

My partner and I spent one (Thursday) night at Tulia. The night before, we called Tulia from where we were staying in Nairobi to book one night in a double room (shared bathroom). The lady we spoke to confirmed our booking and the price. When we arrived, we were told that there was no record of our booking, that no double rooms were available and that the last of these had been given to another couple earlier. The receptionist kept questioning whether we had really called and did not offer an apology.

However, the Manager, Eric was kind enough to offer us two dorm beds for half price, which we accepted. He also offered us a second night in an upgraded private room for the price of the double.

After this, we went to order dinner. The member of staff who took our order was noticeably intoxicated (not drunk) and wandered off. The food took over 1.5 hours to arrive so we had to ask the staff repeatedly whether our order had actually been taken. We noticed that the staff (a mix of locals and backpackers) were more interested in their private conversations and the rollies being passed around than customers.

One member of staff, Lizzie, however was very gracious and offered us two free beers to make up for the delay. The food itself was good but unfortunately the pool area smells of sewage. Additionally, as other reviewers have pointed out, the hostel cats are permitted to climb on the tables and take an active interest in guest food.

The “shared bathrooms” are comprised of a single toilet and a single shower behind one door. These are shared by numerous dorms and double rooms. This means there was always a queue sitting on the stairs. The shower is hot but the bathroom is otherwise in need of some TLC.

The hostel bar is very popular with locals so the music continued until late. Fortunately we've got noise cancelling headphones but party hostels really aren't our scene.

In the morning, my partner woke up with a massive cockroach in his bed. It was approx 7:30am so we went down to the reception area to complain and check out. My partner also wanted to alert reception to the state of the shared toilet which we weren't able to use.

The gates to the reception door were locked and we could see the Manager, Eric, asleep on the couch inside. We waited for about 45 - 50 mins for the gate to be opened and went in to speak to the lady who had opened them (Eric was still sleeping).

This particular member of staff was exceptionally rude. She argued that it wasn't the hostels’ fault that there was a cockroach in the bed and did not apologise. Instead she told us to order breakfast and wait for the Manager.

We ordered two serves of pancakes and coffees (which the menu states are complimentary with breakfast). Only one coffee and breakfast was delivered. When we followed up, the lady at reception said she didn't realise we had wanted two. My partner's food arrived long after I had finished mine. The pancakes were fine but the fruit that came with them was unfresh and unpleasant. Coffee was a cup of hot milk and a sachet of instant. A cat was on our table for the duration of breakfast.

By the time we finished, Eric was awake. He agreed to let us have the night’s accommodation free of charge, based on the multitude of failures we'd experienced at the hands of Tulia during our very short stay.

As soon as Eric left, however, the lady who had been rude before became even more so and was incredibly aggressive. She told another member of staff, in front of us, that we weren't paying because “a cockroach was blown through the window”, then tried to charge us for the coffees because “they're only complimentary for paying guests” and, when we tried to leave, she stopped us and, pointing at me, asked whether there was a cockroach in my bed too. I said no, as it was in my partner's, and she told me I should pay for my bed even though the matter had already been settled by her Manager. Horrifying experience!

Nice place to stay if your travelling light and don't mind the hippy culture way of doing things. There is a pool and outdoor activities, 5 mins walk city mall and navias mall and 10mins from the beach, good public transportation access, limited parking

I love this place. Its serene is cool, near tge beach,Nakumatt Nyali shopping mall, 500m away from Mombasa-Malindi highway. There is a swimming pool, bar n grill, sport house and very comfy to kids

Friendly staff, very flexible setting which can accomodate romantic dates, staff team buildings, birthday parties and football events. Perfect place for back packers and explorers who like to be closely in touch with the local environment and culture.
