  Japanese Guesthouse close to Gion, Kyoto. The guesthouse manager Rico is amazing. She spoke fluent English and could not help us enough. Lovely lady and a stunning location. Book early as she sells out quickly.

  Yumiya Komachi is a pleasant traditional home, reasonably priced and conveniently located at the heart of Gion district. Rico, the joyful host, is full of good advice; the rooms have a quaint feel to them and the place is clean and welcoming. There are a few house rules, which enable the place to remain a quiet and enjoyable den.

  The worst place I've ever had the misfortune of staying in.
  Firstly, it's a non smoking establishment, which is fine - I travel the world, and most hotels are non-smoking. However, my daughter and I are both smokers and because the place is non smoking, we each had a cigarette outside before retiring for the night. Because Japan is such a clean place, instead of dropping our cigarette butts outside, we took them in and dumped them in the bin provided in the room. When we arrived back from sightseeing the next day, the owner (Rico) confronted us with the butts and accused us of smoking in the room and tried to extort $3000 out of us (I still have the handwritten note she wrote to prove this) I might add here, that I do not even smoke in my bedroom at home, let alone non-smoking hotels.
  She had also gone through all our luggage and other personal belongings - an absolute violation..! I know this because I always set specific things in a certain way for that very purpose.
  Other than that, there is a curfew (11pm) and the floorboards are creaky and noisy, making it almost impossible to take a shower at night in the tiny shared bathroom without making a noise and having her run out to see what's going on. One cannot even sit outside in the "courtyard" on a warm evening because the house is locked up at 11pm (even though the gate to the outside courtyard is locked) without having her appear to herd one back inside. My fiance is much younger than I am (she's 31 yrs old) and this Rico person had the audacity to comment that I must be loaded to have such a young fiance - effectively suggesting that my fiance a hooker of sorts. Rico is constantly in one's face, passing this off as being "helpful" We checked out in disgust before completing our stay there, and went to stay in a proper (non smoking) hotel. Yumiya Komachi is certainly a charming, authentic house, but it is marred by this thoroughly unpleasant and precocious woman who is only interested in sucking the last available penny out of her victims - by any means possible. Every other hotel we stayed in from Kyoto to Fuji to Nagoya to Tokyo and Osaka was absolutely pleasant, but Yumiya Komachi cannot pass as a hotel or guest house by any stretch of the imagination. Avoid this place at all costs unless you have a secret desire to experience a prison camp first hand.
