Room size is quietly small. Breakfast is buffet so you can eat whatever you want. Hotel is located in downtown and close to shopping street.

We stayed at this hotel in Kumamoto from April 11 to April 16, so this review will have two parts. Pre-earthquake and post-earthquake. The hotel is a newer building in the central part of Kumamoto. It is easy to access using the streetcar system from the JR Station. The hotel is in the middle of the downtown nightlife, shopping and restaurants. Cultural activities (Castle, museums, etc) are all within a short walking distance. The hotel room is clean and up to date, but a bit small, however that is typical for most Japanese hotels. The free breakfast has lots of variety and was a great start to our day. The trying part of our trip started April 14, after Kumamoto suffered the first of two major earthquakes (and many small and mediums quakes). During this catastrophe, both the physical hotel and the staff performed above and beyond what you would expect. During both major quakes (which happened about a day apart) the staff stayed on duty assisting the scared and confused guests. They even continued with the breakfast service throughout everything! I am sure these employees had their own homes and family they were worried about, but they showed nothing but concern for their guests and continued to care for us as if it were business as normal. As for the building - asleep in this hotel during the second more serious earthquake, we felt as if the building would collapse given the violence of the shaking. The staff ran throughout the 10 story building making sure everyone evacuated. After spending several hours in a safe outdoor location we returned to the hotel to find minimal physical damage, so we were able to return to our room and (attempt) to sleep. We were not supposed to check out until April 17, but because all public transportation was shut down (airport, rail lines and roads damaged) we had to make a decision to wait it out or attempt to reach another city with an airport. The hotel offered to hold our room and extend our stay if we were unable to leave, but in the end we were able to make it to Fukuoka to fly back to Tokyo and make our scheduled flight home. I highly recommend this hotel on so many levels - but most of all because the calm and kind staff cared for us, while I believe the well constructed building saved our lives.
