Cool castle, awesome views. There are lots of tunnels you can explore so bring a headlamp and a flashlight. Definitely could use some improved sinage.

You can park at the visitors center and walk over or if you are in a car you can park right at the castle.

Well worth taking a detour to visit - atmospheric and intriguing - though some signage explaining the history would have helped. We were the only visitors there on the day we went so had the site entirely to ourselves, which was an unexpected bonus.

The secret tunnel is amazing, however I did not finish it. Maybe 200 steps in the midway. It needs some courage to walk down totally alone in the dark. And the steps are slippery, too. Need to be very careful if you want to try by yourself. I tried the other end later which is on the roadside, just as the guidebook describes, with a ladder. The spring is hardly seen in this season.

I had a great adventure here at the Shobak Castle. I followed the route mentioned in Lonely Planet and explore this ancient castle. It is amazing. I found a small piece of rock with ancient craving on it on the ground. I put it on a higher position on a wall so it won’t be destroyed by the innocent steps. There are two staircases leading u down to dark places. I guess that’s the prison. The staircase is quite slippery (because of the small stones n sand) and I think it is not quite safe to get down.

We did a quick drive by of this castle, just to look at it from the outside. I don't think that it would be a good place to add into an itinerary. But if you keep driving to the east you will pass an old car that is registered at the worlds smallest hotel. Good for a quick stop and pictures on your travels past!

If you like a little bit of adventure, this is an ABSOLUTE MUST SEE!!!
We went to Shobak castle after visiting Dana. It's very close, easy to find on Google Maps. Park at the visitor center on the left, then walk to the actual ruins. The entrance is free with Jordan pass or 1JOD without. You will most likely be the only tourists there, this little jewel is not renowned yet. The castle hasn't been reconstructed so most of it is in ruins: it's completely authentic and it has a lot of feels to it. Nothing is closed so you can walk freely absolutely everywhere and explore the whole castle at will. The incredible views and the peaceful atmosphere will let you soak in the beauty of this site. Once you are done visiting the visible part of the castle, head for the SECRET TUNNEL Just ask the staff at the entrance to point you the right way, and head towards the most unique experience! No spoilers but make sure to bring a torch or to have battery on your phone to use as torch (not suitable for kids or if you are not in good physical conditions/ claustrophobic). Once you find the tunnel keep going carefully down the slippery stairs until you see the light Then climb the ladder and come back into the outside world! The walk back up is a bit long but the experience is so worth it.

Interesting place . Nice to explore . Ruins of a crusader castle near to the border of Jordan and present day Israel . No fees for entry .
You can touch and feel history yourself . Guides may or may not be available . Good idea to go before its dark .

Really not a whole lot to see. The drive up to it is more interesting than the castle itself. I can imagine it being more impressive in the winter with snowfall though.

Only A bit out of the way if you are headed from the north to Petra.

Spectacular views.

It is less preserved than kerak but also has less information or signage.

A very helpful ticket office attendant offered some guidance around the place.

There is a steep descent to a water spring deep under the castle but wear gripping shoes and be prepared for a hike back up the 365 steps.

100% worth the visit, if you are up to it, do the secret tunnel that takes you to the bottom of the hill. Its a little tough with the uneven steps at time but so worth the effort. Amazing ruins and views, very informative guides available to hire for cheap as well
