The monastery is near the very end of the path. You have to climb to the top. It is even bigger than the Treasury and exposed at an open field of sand with a caffee to rest just opposite of it. If you reach this point, try to reach "greatest view in jordan" which is a 5 minute walk further. It's a pretty high and exposed point so there is wind to cool you down.

If you're already in Petra and are in reasonable shape or have some time, Ad-deir is a pretty amazing place to walk to. Pretty hefty amount of steps but so worth it, bonus of a nice cool cafe at the top!

Very impressive place! Still in great shape. The steps up were not all that bad if you are in decent shape. The cafe at the top is a nice cool place to relax.

Really, really nice. Bargain with the people, especially with the donkey guys, don't pay too much. 5 DJ from the basin restaurant to the monastery.

A must - peaceful and magnificent. Even after 800 steps, long trail, the view and site is worth the effort. Don't leave Petra without seing it.

It is a difficult trek up to the monastery. It is long and steep at times. You need proper shoes for it and need to be in good physical shape.

Having put all the caveats out there, it is all well worth it. The Monastery is beautiful. The facade looks pretty much like the Treasury, but when all the hard work of the trek pays off, it looks even prettier than the Treasury. You can sit at one of the shops opposite the structure and sip tea while enjoying the view. You can also climb up from where the shops are and get a better higher-up view of the Monastery as well.

I went in December and reached around 11am. I felt it was the best time to go as the sun lit up the facade and at the same time the place wasn't too crowded. While I was walking back down, I saw droves of people starting their hike. While it might be good to view the Monastery in the afternoon when the sun is entirely on it (or even for sunset), you have to keep in mind that there will be a lot more people at the site during the afternoon than around noon.

A sight you won't forget, and major certainly worth the long climb (850 steps), less carved than the treasury however it's position and size makes it just as impressive.

If You are a good walker so you must see this spot. It's with one of the nicest buildings here. And there are not so many people early in the morning.

It is almost at the top of the mountain. I saw some people walking on the building though I did not see any way to go up there. There is a cafe in front of the Monastery. Probably it takes 2 hours or so to come to this place after entrance to Petra. You can feel the sense of accomplishment.

Even though I had many offers of donkey, horse, or camel rides, I decided to walk and it was well worth it. Just as amazing as The Treasury. There is many refreshments available along the way to save carrying too much, and helping the many sellers along the way.

Dramatic and very impressive. Exactly what the architects had in mind 2000 years ago I suspect. My hike was 20,000 steps, 13km, and the equivalent of 85 floors climbed. So good boots and water.. And yes, 100% it's worth the effort of getting there..!

HAVE YOUR BEST WALKING SHOES!!! Water & sun hats! :-) There is a rest at the top where you can chill..but it is a decent walk up - especially after coming through all of Petra. At the top you get to see Petra's largest building - from 1st century BC. Well worth it - if you can make it.

Most impressive spot in the old city of Petra. It takes an hour climbing up from the restaurant area but you can also ride a donkey for 5 JD. But I prefer hiking actually, all the sweats and tears (kidding) were paid off when I saw this magnificent monument.
