Svöðufoss is a beautiful waterfall where the river Hólmkelsá, sometimes also called Laxá. The combination of basalt column at the upper edge of the waterfall and the spring fed river makes this wonderful waterfall interesting. It is fully worth the walk and dont skip walking up to the top where the river falls.
Well signposted from the main road. Access is along a 1.6km gravel track with ample parking at the end. To get to the waterfall itself it is necessary to walk across some rough moorland and hop over a small stream, but nothing too taxing. Although not the most amazing falls in Iceland they are certainly worth a visit and there are some nice examples of basalt columns too on the edge of the waterfall.
Beautiful waterfall! You can walk quite near to the fall itself next to the river. We also went up the hill and had a stunning view from the top! Took us half an hour until we were back at the car. Totally worth a stop!
