Great experience! My husband loved it. I dont particularly like horses I've never been that close to a horse but I found the horses to be extremely comfortable with humans & the tour guides were along side us the whole time. If I liked horses I'd definitely be back, but I don't so I won't.

The weather was terrible, but the experience was excellent! Friendly, knowledgeable staff. As an inexperienced rider, they picked the perfect horse for my skill level, which made the ride that much more enjoyable. Although we didn't take part in the lunch, it smelled and looked delicious! A must do activity for your trip to Iceland!

My wife and I visited Ishestar in March 2028 and we loved it! After driving around the island for a week, it became clear that the Icelandic horse is a proud, national symbol for Icelanders. And, they're incredible! Every horse we saw in the country seemed happy. I know that sounds odd, but it's true. They actually play with each other and run around.
The crew at Ishestar taught us a lot about Icelandic horses, horse culture, and even the individual horses we rode. The whole experience was fantastic. I highly recommend it.response / report this review -

Too the riding through legs fields tour. It was just amazing.
Got picked up on time and the staff was in general very helpful and felt looked after at all the time.
You get time to get to know your horse and the guides take pictures for you during the ride. Highly recommend to go there!response / report this review -

This is a very well run operation with well trained, good tempered horses and guides. All of the equipment you might need was available and prepared - all you need are comfortable clothes for staying warm and dry.
We were picked up in downtown Reykjavik, taken their facility on the edge of town, and after being equipped and briefed, we took ride through lava fields, lasting about an hour. The group split into fast and slow groups. Since this was my first horse ride, I stayed with the slow group, while my wife went with the fast group.
The slow group stayed at a walking pace, over easy hills through the lava fields. Us newbies were told how to manage our weight to stay stable through the hills, and had a pleasant ride with a stop for grass and photos.
The fast group picked up the pace a bit - not exactly galloping through the countyside, but enough to enjoy the horse's super smooth tolt. My wife is a former equestrian competitor and would have enjoyed a faster pace using all of the horse's gait - but the group was appropriate for people with only moderate experience. They also had a photo of in the middle.
Both horses - even the four year old my wife was riding - were easy going, not spooked by the cars or dogs we encountered, amazingly sure footed, and not difficult to control. They did not really require much direction, as they know and followed the program. Both of us were able to direct our horses to keep a safe (out of hoof range) distance from the other horse, until the guides informed us that it was not necessary : these horses are happy to trail each other nose to tail.
This easy ride was one of the highlights of a week in Iceland, but may become exorbitantly expensive if Icelandic horses can thrive in Central Texas.response / report this review -

There was a problem at the beginning of our tour with us not being picked up. However, it was dealt with quickly and professionally. It then ended up with us having the horse trek with 4 of us plus the guide. It was a truly lovely and unique experience. You trek across the lava fields and our guide catered for all of our abilities. Would highly recommend this. We would definitely go again.

Such an amazing experience in a beautiful location. Horses were all very well behaved and easy to ride, you're giving protective and warm clothing as well as instruction on how to ride Icelandic Horses. No experience needed. Would have personally enjoyed a longer more fast paced ride, but perfect for beginners and a quick experience of Icelandic riding.

I had no idea that Icelandic horses were so famous in the equestrian world when I booked my tour! What great luck. I booked a "Meet the horses" tour-I know many people opt to book the riding tour, but as a vegan I feel iffy about using animals for transportation, so I only wanted to see them-and since I was the only person that day, I was able to have the tour guide all to myself! Super cool. I forget my guide's name, so I'll caller her "T", but she was very friendly and informative: I got to learn about how Icelandic horses are capable of 5 different gaits(which is the reason why horse enthusiasts come from all over the world to ride them), and how Icelandic horses are very emotional, and tend to have a best friend, whom they have a strong bond with: T told me a story about how in one particular pair of horses, after one died, the other passed away from heartbreak. Quite sad, but it is amazing that they can have such a strong bond(and as a vegan, it reinforced for me the belief that animals are sentient beings capable of feeling just as much physical, and also emotional pain as a human!)
After T finished her presentation, we went outside to the stable, and I got to pet, and brush the mane of one of the horses. Then after she told me more information about grooming procedures, she left me on my own and I was able to pet, and take pictures of the horses in the stable and paddock as much as I wanted.
I loved this tour, and would highly recommend it for anyone who doesn't feel comfortable riding horses but still wants to meet these sweeties.

Horrible experience. Trails were incredibly icy, they shouldn’t have been giving rides. Completely irresponsible. My horse kept slipping and one girl’s horse actually did slip and she fell off and hurt herself badly. Also the guides were a joke. One was on her phone the whole time and the other kept hitting on my husband. The rest of my Iceland trip was a dream but this was a nightmare. Would NEVER come back to this stable.

Horseback Riding and Whale Watching tour. Didn't see and orange-red lava fields as described which was a bit disappointing, maybe it was covered in snow?
Great half day ride, waterproof and warmth outerwear provided as as as boots and helmets. Icelandic horse have shorter legs, kind of like ponies. They have a small cafe if you want to grab a quick bite. We split into two groups half way with one fast and one slow which was good for such a large group.response / report this review -

Meeting the horses, although the staff were nice, the horses were living in filth. Not sure if this is normal practice for all tourist riding stables or not. It was lovely to meet the horses though, but felt bad about their conditions.

Really friendly staff and amazing horses. Located just a short ride outside Reykjavík. We had the “Meet the horses” tour with our 4-year old who really enjoyed getting to met, great and spend some time with the horses (and all the other animals in the stables). A must experience for any Iceland vacation.

Very high quality outfit. They have good equipment and animals. The international staff knew a lot about the horses and could easily adjust to eiders from beginner to Advanced.
The trails are wonderful, they quickly get to some beautiful back countryside. Being so close to town (20 minutes), I was concerned that the scenery would have buildings and homes. After a short time it was wide open terrain.
We did a short 3 hour advanced ride. In hindsight a multiday ride would have made our trip to Iceland that much better.response / report this review -

These two hours were possibly the most amazing in my whole life. The tour guides were awesome and very knowledgable. The weather was picture perfect. Sunny, blue sky, and warm (sweater weather). My pony was a little temperamental at first, but once we got to know each other, we both had a great time. I will never forget this experience of trotting through a lava field with a group of others who were as fascinated by the peacefulness as I was. Truly magical.

Great ride and awesome view - the horses are easy to ride and the facility is conveniently located about 15 minutes car ride from Reykjavik. It offers free coats and pants for windy and rainy weather. Very good experience and I will recommend this place.

We had a really good ride back in January. Girls leading the group were friendly, stunning scenery and they suited the riders to the horse and speed of group. So beginners and advanced still get to enjoy the Icelandic ponies! They are eager when they get going, very smooth gait! Must try!

Head's up- These horses are pretty wild. I was bucked off along with 2 other people in our group when my horse was spooked as a car passed. Ruined my trip and I grew up riding.

So fun to ride the Icelandic ponies! Kinda sucks that you can't hold you phone or camera So bring your go pro or action cam to strap on to your body!

Went on one of Ishestar's advanced day rides, and had a great time. The horses were healthy, friendly, and interested, and the lava fields were spectacular. I'd definitely do this again.
