Great hiking trial until you get past the cave and you have to walk across a river with a rope and a log. I know we were warned about it beforehand but disappointing we missed the waterfall.

We went up the left side and it was beautiful. The water was really high and strong when we went so we didn't want to cross the log. The sign says you can't see the falls from the left side, but that's not true. If you keep climbing to the very top, you can get a great view!

Mid May, the route across the river (via log) was still closed. Trail on the side of the parking lot was almost not marked but if you use gps and google maps you should be able to reach top in an hour without too many detours. View from this side is unfortunately underwhelming compared to Icelandic standards.

Highly recommend this hike.
Unfortunately the river pass was closed during our visit. But the hike up the left side was still a great experience and super adventurous.

Beautiful area and not too swamped with tourists once you get away from the carpark. You can do the walk-and-wade to see the falls or just hike the stunning scenery.

Beautiful hike. We went in mid October so the log over the river had been removed for the season. Took the north trail up to the falls. Apparently you can see the falls better on the south trail (with the log). Beautiful none the less. Would recommend. Now: this is actually a hike on private property so don't be surprised by the signs in the parking lot.

This was absolutely breathe taking - but easy to moderate is an understatement. I hike every weekend with my girlfriend across NYS and this is a lot different than most trails I've hiked. At one point (since we came in fall) you have to cross an ice cold stream barefoot on sharp rocks (I suggest bringing water shoes / water proof boots). The trail is definitely worth it, it was the most stunning views I have seen in my entire trip here in Iceland, just be prepared for steep inclines with large drops, loose rocky paths and crossing a very cold stream.

Wanted to go to this revered waterfall. When we started walking to the falls we came across a set of rapids that had to be crossed by walking across a log. I was with my mother a the time who is not what i would describe as an athletic angel and was forced to turn around. Saw photos of the falls themselves later, people we met who were returning said that the view of the valley you hike is better than that of the falls.

Hiking the loop around Glymur is a fantastic experience. The hike is fun and challenging and the views are amazing throughout. I would recommend hiking up the right side and down the left side. The entire hike takes around 3 hours including breaks for appreciating the scenery, pictures and food/water. Worth noting that you will have to wade through the river at the top and bottom but only comes up just above ankle (depending on the route you choose!).

The hike in was a bit more strenuous than expected, but WELL worth the effort. Glymur is a much different type of waterfall compared to the rest of the famous ones around Iceland. Expect to soak your feet in the river crossing and use ropes to ascend/descend a few tricky, steep areas. If you're comfortable with that then this hike is worth the end result.

The path is difficult but thanks to the ropes and yellow spray paint dots it's not too bad. We visited at the end of the day, (9:15-11:10pm) so couldn't complete the full circuit. We spent 1 hour walking as fast as we could, and got to a sign marked 4- I don't think it was 4 on the map though, but certainly past number 3. The waterfall was still some distance away but we had a nice view of it. We had to turn back because of weather/light but we were a fair bit quicker than the estimated time (3hr return) on the map. Hike is not suitable for children. Some other people mentioned not crossing the river/not getting wet feet. there is a plateau past the cave that you can view the waterfall from a distance, but it's on the other (car park) side of the gorge. I didn't do this, I just saw some people in the distance.

Hiking to Glymur was probably my group's favorite activity we did while in Iceland. Be advised that there is a part where you ford about half of the river (it is cold but refreshing) and walk across a log the rest of the way. There is a rope strung across also to hang on to so it is safer. Take off your shoes and roll up your pants a bit for this because the water went up halfway up our calves or so when we visited. The river crossing at first seems a bit daunting but it is really not that bad! The hike as a whole is clearly marked. There are sections that are steep/have loose stones but there are ropes to hold onto for these areas. The views are extremely beautiful, especially when you get closer to Glymur. I recommend packing a lunch to eat at one of the viewpoints.

Absolutely stunning location. Amazing canyon with a spectacular view. We didn't even reach the waterfall itself, because the hike got treacherous and we were packing a little baby but even without making it to the end, the hike was totally worth our time.

I just did this hike March 19 and there was a lot of snow, it was a lot harder than I was expecting coming back down because of the snow. I was wearing proper shoes but still found myself slipping a lot. Recommend bringing crampons. The trail is very easy to follow and it took me 1 hour to get to the top. It was an amazing morning and the drive there is well marked, and accessible with any type of vehicle.

A tough walk. The river crossing was not open in January so we had to stay on the north side. The view of the south side cliff face was the most terrifying sight I've seen whilst in Iceland. The power and scale of the waterfall is almost nauseating. And going up the hill to the top in thick but gentle snow was dream like. The view of the falls is probably not as good from that side, and there is no path to guide you, but it is worth trying to get to the top regardless. A magnificent view.

This is an amazing hiking taking you up and around the Glymur water fall. Early stages of the trail you will find a log across a river, you then proceed up a steep embankment, however trail conditions aren't too rough. Once you're past the steep embankment it's smoother slopes along a gorgeous canyon. Be sure to stop along the side for photographs. I'd suggest hiking boots , water and a small lunch.

Fantastic landscape and dramatic waterfall with high cliffs. :)
Beautiful.
Due to lots of rain the log crossing is not possible without getting your feet really wet.
Above your knees deep now and one of two logs has been swept away by the river.
So up and down on the western side for now until someone fixes the crossing.response / report this review
