I wouldn't say it's worth paying so much for this. I did the Ice cave and glacier walk. The tour was dry and slightly boring. The views and the nature were amazing though but didn't feel the tour really provided anything beyond just driving you there.. it's a shame we have to pay to see nature in this way as it should be free. If you don't have the option of going elsewhere, or don't have a Jeep you can use to drive it close by yourself to walk on a glacier then you might feel you have to do this, but if you get a chance to go elsewhere i'd recommend doing that.
We had the best experience with Glacier Guides! We were on one of the first tours they took to the Katla Ice Cave, which was amazing. Both of the guides we worked with were incredibly kind and full of knowledge. I would definitely book a tour with this company again and recommend them to anyone visiting Iceland.
We took a 5 hour hike with around 3.5 hours on the ice. Dan was our guide and he was really friendly and fun. He gave his best in showing us the spots on the glacier which were safe for the entire group. The weather can make a lot of difference in accessing the various parts of the glacier. But Dan was very knowledgeable and knew the glacier really well. He took us to see some very interesting parts of the glacier. His knowledge exemplified his passion for the tours that he guides. The service of the entire staff was nice. Would definitely recommend Glacier Guides your tours.
Fantastic hiking experience on the glacier. The guides are friendly and know how to involve people during the hike. Strongly recommended!
BAD HEALTH AND SAFETY - ACCIDENT NEARLY CAUSED SOLELY BY THE GUIDE
We had a tour with Claire today. At some point of the hike when the guide was demonstrating to another person how to do an ‘ice climbing’ pose on the ice, she swang her right shoe backward with her clamps intending to slam her clamps into the ice but at the point I was behind her picking up my gloves. Clamps are sharp metal attached on your shoes to enhance your grip to the ice. If I had not moved fast enough, she would have slammed the back of her clamps on my face or even into my eyes.
She should have looked behind her or given others some warnings before she intended to do this.
This was very bad health and safety. The guide nearly kicked into my face with her clamps!
Further, there were three groups of us this afternoon. The group went to see the cave 10 minutes before us. When it was our round, we were told by the guide that due to bad weather condition it wasn’t advisable to visit the caves. However, there was another group that went straight in to see the cave 5 minutes after us. It was a situation clearly misjudged by the guide bearing in mind the guide has only worked there for 2 months. We flew hundreds miles to come in to see the cave but didn’t manage to see it purely due to the misjudgement of the guide.
We wasted so much time listening to the guide talking, introducing ourselves, answering what flavours ice-cream we liked, which were completely irrelevant to our visit to the glacier. If there was less wasteful talking, we could have more time to see the glacier and to take a proper photo on the glacier. There was literally no time to take a proper photo.
We viewed that the guide at Glaciers Guide was not experienced or qualified. We were not even compensated or verbally addressed by the office at Glaciers Guide for not being able to see part of the excursions.
To be honest, I am still in shock that the sharp clamps of the guide’s shoe nearly smacked into my face.
Disappointed.
Not recommended.
When you are booking your glacier tour guide on Iceland you have many options. We choose Glacier Guides and never regret that. We took a 5 hour glacier hike, and spend on the ice around 3.5h, which was just about right. Our guide Stephane was awesome. Professional, fun, but always our safety was her main concern. Her knowledge about the glaciers is impressive. She was able to talk about it during the whole trip, and answered all our questions.
We were able to discover many parts of the glacier. That’s include flats, steeps, crevasses and many others. We even went as far up as safety possible, and really have close up look at that monster. I think we took a hundreds of picture up there.
I highly recommended Glacier Guides and I hope you will have great weather as we had.
All tour guides were super nice, we got Steph and she was AMAZING! The tour itself however was quite a let down.
Took us about 30 min. to get to the glacier, but only 15ish min. to get backweird. The entire tour from parking lot back to parking lot was around 2 1/2 hours, not 3. The most disappointing part was the ice cave. We trekked to the ice cave only to find that we couldn't enter it due to a storm that blew some snow inside it the night before. They had guides on the glacier bright and early, all with walkie-talkies, and nobody informed the tour guides of the condition of the ice cave. Therefore, our "ice cave tour", was standing in the entrance of the ice cave for maybe 5 minutes. They had no back-up ice cave. We then walked probably a third of the way up the glacier and we're allowed to only take pictures for another 3 or 4 minutes and had to hike back down. End of tour.
Worth $200? Definitely not. Only cool part about the experience was walking on a glacier.
Great tour. Safe and experienced team. We took the half day tour with Hurley and the entire journey was great. Would recommend to go
Did the glacier walk and it was very enjoyable, great for a quick trip to Vatnajökull if you're doing the ring road would recommend the next level hike if you have more time to spend at the park.
Awesome tour - I would go again!
I highly recommend wearing waterproof coat + pants (these can also be rented from Glacier Guides)
Fantastic tour. We took the simplest one since we had kids. Not super easy, but well worth the money and effort. But the 5 stars in this review is for our guide, Mr Hurley. He was amazing, just splendid! He kept the kids occupied, took time to get to know us, and was obviously very knowledgeable. He explained complex glacier phenomena with simple easy to understand concepts that kept our kids engaged and us hooked. We would highly highly recommend him and Glacier Guides.
I went on the Glacier Extreme tour, involving a glacier hike and actual ice climbing, and it was one of the highlights of my life thus far. I had such an amazing time! Our guide, Reese, was so great and knew so much about climbing and about the glacier. I wish I could go again on this trip, but unfortunately it will have to wait until next time. I wish I could give this company more than 5 stars!
Went on a wonderful hike today! Eric was an amazing guide, and has such a wonderful personality! He was very attentive to those of us that were having a bit of difficulty with the climb, and I always felt safe with him! I would totally recommend this company!
The guides are professional and lead us a great trip for ice walking and climbing. You should never miss this activity. My selection is Glacier extreme for 6.5hrs.
Overall pretty cool, but its incredibly expensive for a very short 100m walk up the side of a glacier. The guides, expectedly, make you wear safety helmets and carry ice axes, but its totally unnecessary unless youre a novice. For anyone who has spent any time on a mountain at all, this will be an incredibly tame experience and for the money I wish I would have gone out on my own. Great guide though, super friendly, Im not criticizing the guide in any way, just the experience overall was not what I was hoping for- which would have been to be able to explore the glacier for more than about 30-45 min.
You can do these things for free, it's a national park!
Excellent, friendly staff. Went on an ice cave tour and it was very enjoyable, but I'm not sure if it was completely worth the money. We got some lovely pictures, but it probably would have been better if the weather had cooperated and I would have preferred more information from our guide as we were driving to the site.
Unfortunately, the weather did not permit us to go into the glacier like we had hoped. The company was only able to refund us half of our money instead of the full amount. We still went on the tour, however, was only able to take photos from the outside of the glacier. It was still breathtaking!!
Excellent experience, although our guide Sam from Manchester had a larger group than he expected, as our other planned guide had to take someone who was unable to make the climb. He did a fantastic job, kept us all safe and was very informative. Also very hard working as he had to cut steps into the ice on the way down as a few were finding it tricky. An experience not to be missed if your visiting Iceland, plus you'll get some fantastic photos if your lucky like is an the sun comes out, hope you all enjoy your trips to this amazing place.!
