Lovely old exterior and public spaces, but rooms in desperate need of some care. I would describe it as a 4 star hotel, but I had a 2 star room. Staff all very helpful, and location is great to get around the city being near a tram and metro stop.

This place is clearly AN inspiration for The Grand Budapest Hotel, but maybe also The Shining. A cool old building, the layout of which is difficult to understand at best, but charm oozes from every random hallway and ornate window. Very decent breakfast, very cool spa attached, and a perfect location from which to explore Budapest. Will visit again next time I'm in town.

Beautiful interior. There's a, I don't know what color to call it, terracotta marble you see everywhere here -- staircases, floor tiling, wainscoting, the walls of subway stations -- that's just stunning. It must be ferrous. The name of the State where I'm from -- Colorado -- derives from the Spanish word 'red' (rojo). And what we call 'red rock', as in the natural outdoor amphitheater "Red Rocks", is the same hue, maybe a little more plum and less rust. Saw The Dead a couple times there. You can tell I'm thinking of home.

Spent 5 nights here in September 2017. The Pros: This hotel has a fantastic location, with rooms in front facing Danube River views, with access to the Metro, Trams, and buses directly in front of the hotel. It is a beautiful older hotel, with an easy connection inside the hotel to the famous Gallert Baths. The staff was quite helpful and friendly. The rooms and the public areas were clean. Our room, a two room suite, was huge, with a curving walled sitting room with doors onto small balconies.
The Cons: The entire hotel appears worn and threadbare. It desperately needs a top to bottom refurbishment replacing the worn out carpets, furniture, paint peeling in places, etc. And, the plumbing system was leaking sewer gas odors into my room. I mentioned it to the reception people, but they could of do nothing about it.
All in all, the location and views drags it up from two stars to three.response / report this review -

Very dirty and old hotel,back to the past 😐 ants in the room, heavy key (no card system),you have to pay for slippers to come into the bad.Nice building,but it needs a lot of renewels

I'm sorry to say that this hotel wasn't what I expected it to be. From the outside it is quite beautiful and it's located perfectly with a great view of the danube as well as several sights in the vicinity. The staff is attentive, professional and polite - however, the rooms and quite a large part of the interior is in desperate need of an overhaul. The porcelain in our toilet has sprung and there were several spiders comfortably settled on the ceiling of our room.
It didn't help that the room service was inconsistent at best - some days everything would be satisfactory (minus the spiders still being there) - but some days the cleaning ladies would only refill one towel (for a double room) or forget refilling the shower gel.
The on-site restaurant (Panorama) was great in terms of service and food, but the live music gypsy band got rather pushy in selling one of their CDs to us, which left a bad taste in our mouthes. We would've been happy to tip them for their - quite frankly - amazing performance and musical aptitude, but urging diners to buy their CDs didn't do this upscale atmosphere any justice.
The major negative point was the missing AC - and of course I get that this is our fault for not checking beforehand. We could've known had we studied our reservation more carefully, but for a four star hotel on a middle to upper price scale you would expect as much. During our week-long stay we managed to identify several two to three star hotels who would have provided AC for around the same room price, which was annoying to see to say the least.
TL;DR: I'm sure this beautiful (from the outside) hotel was a true star in the past, but the owners need to do some serious modernizing to get it back on the map today.response / report this review -

Some people prioritise their opinion of hotels on how classy the hotel itself is, reputation or facilities within the hotel outside of the rooms. That, unfortunately for thisreview, isn't me. The hotel looks amazing from the outside, an old design that has lots of character and similarly on the inside there's a lot of old fashioned class. Also the spa inside is very popular I'm told.
But for me, when i travel, the hotel i stay in is just a room to sleep and a place to come back to in between sightseeing. As such there has to be a level of comfort. That was not the case. The room is on the small side with just about space for bed and cupboard. Separate toilet and shower room.. each very small. No fridge, no safe for valuables (admittedly i wasn't missing anything afterwards) and most importantly no air conditioning which in August definitely did not make for a comfortable night's sleep, even with the fan provided. Although i don't care for view that much, this room just overlooked the inside of the hotel.
The staff were polite and place was clean enough the hotel located in a fairly central place but unfortunately room was just not comfortableresponse / report this review -

This place needs some serious investment. It's a shame, because of its history and building, it could be amazing. Unfortunately it's run like a budget hotel. I only paid 75€ for my single room, which is why it gets 2 stars, as the value was actually pretty good with free Spa entry and Breakfast included. There was no hot water in the room (I had to have a cold shower), and the breakfast was very disappointing (given it was free, that's some achievement).
Go if you can get a cheap room, and enjoy the Spa and the history. Don't pay more than I did or you will be very disappointed.response / report this review -

Expect a very basic two star hotel. Dingy and so very dated. The other reviews say that but it’s not until you get there that you realize that it’s feels about 20 years dated. The hotel description says 4 star but it certainly isn’t. The location is good and it gives you a one-time free Spa access but these benefits certainly do not negate the fact that the beds, mattresses, pillows (hurt my neck), curtains, carpets and floors are date outdated. I stayed in the single room for two nights and the decor reminded me of staying in a hostel. I don’t believe they had an air-con. I was too hot and had to open the window and then was too cold. The long and short is that it’s probably best not to stay here. It’s just like staying in a hostel. If you are looking for and comfortable room, this isn’t the place.

Situated in an historical building that comprises even the thermal baths this hotel is the right choice if you want a relaxing stay. Moreover, it is next to an underground station and near the Danube, just in front of the Liberty bridge. The staff is incredibly kind and professional.

Beautiful old rooms with alot of charm. Don't be turned away by them being outdated, it definitely works for Gellert hotel. some rooms have a large balcony with chairs to give you an amazing view of the Danube. Staff were always lovely and helpful. I'd definitely recommend the breakfast if possible, the best breakfast I've ever had. So much choice and freshly cooked. Everything is replaced as soon as it runs out. Multiple coffee and juice machines so there's never any wait. Would recommend the spas too. It's in a great location with wonderful views

Old school grand hotel atmosphere. Not the most modern, but ok. And there is a great spa linked to the hotel that you can visit for free when staying in the hotel.

Nice hotel. A shiny brilliant of the Hungarian culture. Definitely recommended for tourists. Thermal bath and pools are marvellous. The rooms are a bit simple but still comfortable. Staff are professional and very helpfull
