Great place better people
Great location, property needs a bit of work but they are trying to renovate it and bring it back to its former glory.
Worst experience ever. First of all, this is not even the name of the place. There's a big sign outside the hotel that says "Exxtraordinary Resorts" and all of the staff were wearing shirts with the same thing. *Nothing* is branded "Souza Bay Resorts". Then, after spending over an hour trying to find the place, I spent Over an hour to check in. The lady at the desk flirting with the men checking in at the front, which is delaying the process even more. She then asked me how I was doing, I said "annoyed at having to wait over an hour, and not even getting recognition at the door", she just smirked and kept working Ignored again. Sat there in awkward silence. It's funny too because they had been asking everyone for security deposits for incidental charges, and for me Nothing.
Rooms - not something I'd pay for ever again. Below the bare basics. Not even hot water.
I don't even want to go to the restaurants here. Not looking forward to it. Terrible service and I do not recommend anyone come here. Do not waste your time. *TRUST ME*.
Great place to be was there in feb and may of this year walked down the neighborhoods and people was friendly nice atmosphere
Nice location
We were here in 2007 and 2008 and was great.
The pizza was hard. 😂 but the atmosphere was nice! Great pools and beach is close by and nice. Went down the back path into the neighborhood omg bad idea I thought I was going to get kidnapped. Smart move was not talking to anyone so they knew I spoke english. I must say I blend well being black😊 the staff was great and very welcoming.
My wife and I went here for our honeymoon a few years ago and enjoyed our experience. The hotel staff is very friendly and attentive. But the "all inclusive" package we paid for only included bottom-shelf, "rail" liquor that was all the same brand - some generic brand manufactured in the DR. We weren't expecting to be pampered like royalty or anything, but the low-quality liquor tasted awful. Each liquor was the same brand, and tasted like those liquors you can buy for $10 per 1.75 liter. So, I stuck to beer. The beer option is Brahma, a brand I've never heard of. Also a bottom-shelf beer, but it actually wasn't bad. It reminded me of Natural Light. Not the greatest beer, but drinkable.
The only reason I was hung-up on the booze was because we were in a country that is famous for making great rum, but we couldn't try any of it. There was one bar at the hotel that served the good liquors, but apparently my wrist-band was the wrong color so I did not have access to the good liquors. The girl behind the bar told me she couldn't serve me any of the great-looking rum because MY all-inclusive package was not the all-inclusive package that included the good liquors. Kindness pays off though, I sadly told her that I had really been looking forward to trying some good Dominican rum. She took pity on me and gave me a very-full glass of rum on the rocks when none of her bosses were looking. I gave her a US $5 bill, which apparently was a very generous tip.
The resort staff and security keeps the local panhandlers, trinket salesmen, and hair-braiding ladies off of the property. But if you stay at this resort, be aware - the minute you step off the property to take a walk through the town or go to the store, you'll be hassled immediately and constantly by panhandlers, men who want to sell you crappy and useless trinkets, and women who want to braid your wife's hair. The word "no" apparently does not have any meaning down there. We just needed to find a convenience store to get a few items for the room, and my wife's asthma was acting up so we needed to visit the pharmacy. (Interestingly, they showcase viagra, valium, and oxycodone, because in the DR the pharmacist behind the counter issues you your "prescription" and takes cash payments.)
We also took a walk along the public beach abutting the resort. Same story, suddenly everybody is your friend and wants to sell you something.
All in all, we had a great experience. Aside from the low quality liquor that "our" all-inclusive package covered, it also included meals at our choice of three different restaurants on the resort. The food was fantastic. We also had beautiful weather - it was in the 80's all week in the middle of February, meanwhile it was freezing cold at home and snowing. Not to mention the beautiful ocean view. So long as we stayed on the resort, we lounged in beach chairs and relaxed all week.
Highly recommended, so long as you aren't expecting to enjoy the DR's famous rums all week and don't plan to leave the resort. (Seriously, if you need stuff for the room, get it from the airport before you get to the resort - everybody you meet off of the resort has an angle and it's difficult to escape from the conversation, because they've learned that tourists will eventually give in and buy crappy trinkets just to be left alone.)
Good hotel
Don't expect a lot
I actually stayed here with a buddy back in March. we got hustled by TONY who acted as if he was giving us a deal and also wanted a 50.00 tip. We were stupid enough to do it!!! Never again. If you are single this place is a dump and you are hidden away from the guests with family like a disease. They tried to suck more money out of me at checkout and I refused to pay. They are leeches at this hotel and the rooms for the price are horrible. For $20 more a night and a few friends you can rent a Villa with your own private pool, BBQ Grill, full kitchen, living room, internet, etc. The best thing is you do not have to live like a slave during your vacation and wear their stupid wrist bands.
