White Sands, although cheap, is not exactly what it looks like in the pictures online. The pictures make it seem like it has much to offer, but in actuality that's not the case. It provides most of the needed survival aspects, such as shelter, but it was not comfortable or clean. The pictures show clean, pristine images of the land and the rooms, but in reality the houses look run down. The walls have a lot of mold, and the rooms are dusty, as if no one cleans them. The exterior is okay, as it is in the middle of a small rainforest area. Monkeys reign in the trees above, and that was quite the experience to see them up close. The exterior is a nice place to sit in the peacefulness of nature. However, some of the items in the house were broken, such as the stove and bed. The major positives of the place is that it is near a beach, and has wifi. In conclusion, I was left slightly dissatisfied, but my expectations were met. I don't recommend going to this house rental unless it were only for one or two nights, and suggest going to one of the other hotels nearby if one were to stay for about a week. I recommend that the owner put a little more effort into the look of the houses so that it meets the look of a clean living place.

It's like camping with a roof. People are very nice and surroundings are beautiful though.

We stayed at the White Sands hotel/cabin for nine days last December; the hotel is in a perfect location. It's not too far from the beach and it's pretty close to many attractions, there are also plenty of restaurants nearby. Keep in mind this, not a "traditional" hotel it's more like a small house or cabin. The rooms were neat and clean, and I loved the fact that we had a kitchenette so we could dine in which was a plus. The compound has a simple charm it's a great place if you want to be it's surrounded by nature. The owner was very welcoming and helpful; I plan on staying here again.

Beautiful location with loads of animals and birds just in the garden. We saw Tucans, different other birds, different types of monkeys, a sloth, etc. best time to see them is in the afternoon. Close to the beach, restaurants and supermarket. Two lovely owners who will help you and make you feel at home.
    Best stay in Costa Rica.

Just to get a start on this review, this hotel is NOT for everyone.

That being said, it's also a fantastic hotel for photography. It is not the traditional hotel in the sense of a bunch of rooms in a large building. It is basically a personal cabin on a property. The owner is friendly and welcoming. If you sit down for a few beers and a chat he will tell you a lot about himself, his life, his family. The cabin itself is a large open floor plan with a mini fridge, a small oven, a table, a futon, a small tv, a bed, and an AC unit in the window. There is a bathroom, but there is no hot water, and a small room behind the kitchen with a sink to wash your clothes by hand. It was a bit hot and sticky at night, but it was still not bad. This is basically a few steps above camping, and is certainly not for people looking for a plush hotel to sit in AC and relax.

The real value of this hotel, is the property itself. As a photographer it has an abundance of wildlife to offer. There is a sloth that comes back on a yearly basis to give birth and raise a baby. We saw both mother and baby in a tree towards the back of the property. Scarlet macaws would often stop by in the trees, mostly towards noon or sunset. A squirrel monkey troop passed through just before sunset on our second day there. There is also a nesting couple of toucans near the edge of the property that can be found in the trees rather easily. The abundance of wildlife found on the grounds or passing through the grounds is astounding. We actually saw more there at the hotel than when we trekked into the Manuel Antonio National Park.

Another large plus for me is the lovely little Mexican restaurant next door called Ta-Cho's. They make an excellent margarita and the food was amazing and very reasonably priced for the portions. You can literally walk right over for an excellent meal.
