Beautiful place located just 3 hours away from San Jose in San Gerardo de Dota, inside the mountains with a great view and nature sounds. Comfortable rooms with heater, orthopedic beds and a private bathroom with hot water. WiFi only in the front desk, restaurant and bar. Great service, excellent food, they have buffet for breakfast and dinner. Tour service and horse walking. If rent a car be shure its SUV 2x4 or 4x4.
Great place, although don't meet the tanker on the way up as you descend the steep access road! Possible for 2wd.
Lovely gardens, good well marked forest trails, and the trogons are found by looking for large flocks of birders by the roadside!
It is above 2000mtrs so cool, but heaters and hot water bottles made it v comfortable. As all hotels, a markup on alcohol
This place is amazing. The staff is so kind and they went above and beyond. For example, we were into our fourth night of traveling with no luggage for a member in our party, and the only place we could place calls (through wifi) was in the bar room with the pool table. One of the workers stayed late to ensure we were satisfied with the response from the incompetent airline. The staff member then hand-wrote notes to tape to doors of the resort to inform whomever is on their way with our luggage where to drop it off if no one is around to receive it. Another staff was up at 4 in the morning to receive the bag. The meals were amazing, best fruit we had in CR, great trails behind the lodge. For birders, I would go birding elsewhere in the early morning bc the sun does not hit those trails until later in the day. Hummingbirds all around the lodge, beautiful weather (we needed sweatshirts in January) and go to Kahawa for lunch. Cheaper and very pleasant experience. I could write so much more, this was our favorite place in CR (we also stayed in Encanta la Vida in Cabo Matapolo which was disappointing, and Uvita which was a cute town but not as wild San Gerardo de Dota).
Amazing little slice of heaven hidden I. The Costa Rican mountains.
Fantastic place, amazing location very much recommended
This place is indescribably beautiful. Thoroughly recommend it, we even saw 3 quetzals.
Nice place in a beautiful valley. The property is well-kept and lovely decorated.
The cabins are cosy with a somewhat rustic Alpine style.
The food buffet is really good, we had fresh trout from the ponds they use to breed them.
Cold knights, bring your winter gear or layers of clothing. The quetzal trogons come here due to the national park nearby. If it is too cold the quetzals wake up later than 6:00. If it rains chances of seeing them are slim. The owners of this lodge bought a piece of land near a quetzal hot spot. And planted some advocado trees. So after the sun rises you might spot them on the advocado trees of the lodge. Beds are reasonable to good. And the showers are excellent. But conserve some water for your neighbours.
The best lodge in the Costa Rican highlands!!! Certainly the best showers in ALL of CR!! The lodge is perfectly situated to access the cloud forest and is small and quiet. No party animals here!!! This area is the best place to see Resplendent Quetzals, and we were very lucky to photograph many!! The staff, especially Greivan, goes out of their way to make your stay wonderful. The Trogon Lodge is truly "Pura Vida"!!!
We stayed 3 nights. The location is very picturesque of the cloud forest: birds everywhere including the resplendent quetzals and trout lakes! We enjoyed the many hummingbirds in residence at the lodge and other birds, Activities beyond bird watching were great- zipline, horseback to the waterfalls. The rooms were very comfortable, the meals were very good value and the staff were excellent. The distance from San Jose airport was well worth the trip. Highly recommended!
